Inleiding
- wegens het oeuvre van de internationaal bekende architect Marcel Breuer;
- wegens de ensemblewaarde als hoofd complexonderdeel van het ontwerp waarbij de parkaanleg met de daarin gesitueerde objecten bewust is meegenomen in het ontwerpproces en als onlosmakelijk geheel met het gebouw zelf beschouwd dient te worden;
- vanwege de gaafheid van het exterieur in hoofdvorm, materiaalgebruik en detaillering;
- wegens de architectuurhistorische waarden door de bijzondere bouwkundige constructie die hier is toegepast;
- wegens de cultuurhistorische waarden, waarbij de architectuur een uiting is van de sociaal-economische ontwikkelingen rond de werkomgeving;
- wegens de architectuurhistorische waarden als bijzonder toonbeeld van het progressieve materiaalgebruik in combinatie met de schaal van de opzet van het geheel;

Description
Description complex component 1
Introduction
OFFICE BUILDING with free-standing CHIMNEY for Van Leer's barrel factory from 1958, designed by Marcel Breuer. Marcel Breuer studied at the Bauhaus where he later also taught. During the war he fled his native Hungary and eventually ended up in America where he taught at Harvard University. In the US he realized many residences but also public and commercial buildings. In the Netherlands, among other things, the Bijenkorf in Rotterdam and the American Embassy in The Hague are from his hand. In addition to architecture, Breuer also designed furniture, of which the "Wassily" chair is perhaps the best known. His oeuvre enjoys worldwide recognition.
The building has an H-shaped floor plan with bent side wings, connected by a central hall, situated in a park layout. The access road runs parallel to the centreline of the north-west wing and opens, by means of a ramp, into the parking deck. In 1985-1988 an internal renovation took place whereby, among other things, a mezzanine was installed and the office layout was altered. The footbridge in the central hall was converted into a full floor and access to the canteen is now provided by means of a newly added staircase. On the exterior, new facade elements with thermally insulated aluminium profiles with double glazing were installed. The elements acquired a new appearance through modified horizontal division and new glass plates in the sun shading.
Description
The OFFICE BUILDING consists of a central building, four office wings and the adjoining canteen at the rear. The building thus has an H-shaped floor plan with the slightly tapering legs bent outward. The central building has two storeys and a concrete folded-slab roof; on either side of this two office wings of three storeys with a flat roof. Behind the central building between the rear (eastern) two legs lies the pavilion-like canteen of one storey with a folded roof. The ridge direction of the central building is parallel to the Amsterdamseweg, that of the canteen is perpendicular to it. The canteen is connected to the central building by means of a glazed corridor.
The office stands on a plinth of black brick, over which the building above cantilevers. A strip of gravel follows the contours of the building. The gable ends of the wings, the rear (east) facade of the central building, the west facade and the rear half of the east facade of the canteen are clad with strips of natural stone (travertine) of various dimensions; each row of stones steps in relation to the layer above and below.
The offices are constructed as a steel skeleton with glazed facades. The long facades of the office wings consist of curtain walls from floor to roof. The glazed elements are enclosed by a concrete frame. The south facades of the wings have external sun shading (overhang); the connection with the roof is formed by a metal drip moulding.
The entrance to the main building is formed by a reinforced concrete structure on two concrete pillars in which the (prefabricated) staircase and overhang are incorporated. The level of the ramp with the undercroft parking zone for the main entrance connects to this. The tall, centrally located entrance hall is situated in the central building and is located on the first floor. The roof has a metal covering with roof lights at the ends. In the four roof panels of the south facade are fans incorporated in concrete recesses.
The canteen has a rectangular floor plan, of which the two short sides are bent inward. The left half of the east facade of the canteen consists of glass, the right half of travertine cladding. This transition in the facade covering corresponds to the surrounding terrace around the southern half of the canteen; the south facade of the canteen is entirely glazed, the north facade of black stone with a continuous row of twelve fanlights of which half have a pivoting section. The entrance to the canteen is located on the left side of the north facade. A terrace has been laid out around the canteen. The concrete folded roof has a metal covering. North of the connection between canteen and central building stands a tall, free-standing brick CHIMNEY from 1957.
The office building was originally intended for 500 employees. The building layout is semi-split level. The folded-slab roof of the central entrance hall is supported by eight Y-shaped tapered concrete columns. Against the rear wall are three man-height groups of sculptures. Each group of bronze sculptures depicts workers in different stages of performing heavy work.
The ground floor of the central building consists, as does the undercroft of the ramp, of a mushroom construction of concrete columns. The office wings were set up according to the open office principle, which is especially evident in the relatively large storey height of 5½ m. The structure of the wings is formed by steel I-columns and beams.
Valuation
The OFFICE BUILDING with free-standing CHIMNEY is of general importance:
- on account of the oeuvre of the internationally known architect Marcel Breuer;
- on account of the ensemble value as principal complex component of the design whereby the park layout with the objects situated within it was consciously incorporated into the design process and should be regarded as an inseparable whole with the building itself;
- on account of the integrity of the exterior in principal form, material use and detailing;
- on account of the architectural-historical values through the special structural construction applied here;
- on account of the cultural-historical values, whereby the architecture is an expression of the socio-economic developments around the working environment;
- on account of the architectural-historical values as a particularly outstanding example of progressive material use in combination with the scale of the layout of the whole;
- on account of the art-historical values through the special artistic application in the interior.
