Inleiding
De MARIAKAPEL is onderdeel van het recreatiecomplex De Lichtenberg. De kapel is, in samenwerking met beeldend kunstenaar Harrie Martens, in 1958 voltooid naar een ontwerp van architect P.H. Weegels. De Mariakapel staat aan de oostzijde van het complex, tegen de omwalling van de buitengracht.
Omschrijving
De eenlaagse MARIAKAPEL heeft een paraboolvormige plattegrond en is opgetrokken in Nivelsteiner breuksteen. Het overstekende betonnen dak heeft in het midden een knik en loopt naar voren toe hoog op. Aan de voorzijde is het overstek zeer groot en ontstaat een luifel die op twee betonnen zuilen rust. In de gebogen muren van breuksteen is direct onder het dakoverstek een reeks kleine rondboog bovenlichten geplaatst. De rechte voorgevel bestaat uit een betonnen rasterwerk. Een deel van de vakken is gevuld met tegelmozaïeken met figuratieve voorstellingen naar ontwerp van Harrie Martens. De uitvoering was onder zijn leiding in handen van leerlingen van de Vrije Expressieclub. In het midden een toegang. Ter plaatse van het altaar is op het dak een karakteristieke betonnen, conisch uitlopende lantaarn met ronde glazen openingen geplaatst. Vóór de kapel is een bordes. De kapel is bereikbaar via enkele treden die met leisteen zijn belegd.
Waardering
De MARIAKAPEL is van algemeen belang
- vanwege de cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van de ontwikkeling van het katholieke leven in het zuiden van Nederland en als typologisch voorbeeld van een naoorlogse kapel.

Description
The single-storey MARIA CHAPEL has a parabolic floor plan and is constructed of Nivelstein rough stone. The overhanging concrete roof has a bend in the middle and rises steeply toward the front. On the front side, the overhang is very large, creating a canopy which rests on two concrete columns. In the curved rough stone walls, directly below the roof overhang, a series of small round-arched fanlights are placed. The straight front facade consists of a concrete framework. Some of the bays are filled with tile mosaics with figurative representations designed by Harrie Martens. The execution was under his direction by pupils of the Vrije Expressieclub. In the centre an entrance. At the level of the altar, a characteristic conically tapering concrete lantern with round glass openings is placed on the roof. In front of the chapel is a platform. The chapel is accessible via a few steps which are covered with slate.
