Inleiding
De AANLEG is als onderdeel van het recreatiecomplex De Lichtenberg in opdracht van het Bisschoppelijk College stand gekomen ten behoeve van faciliteiten voor sport en recreatie voor leerlingen en docenten van het Bisschoppelijk College. Bij het ontwerp is het Amerikaanse campusmodel als uitgangspunt genomen.
Omschrijving
De AANLEG van het recreatiecomplex De Lichtenberg vormt de verbindende schakel tussen de verschillende sport- en recreatiefaciliteiten. Vanuit twee centrale punten, het entreeplein en het vrij open middengebied, is het terrein vormgegeven met een kunstmatig opgeworpen begroeide heuvel voor het theater (tegen de zuidzijde van de tribunes), met paden, waterlopen, begroeide aarden wallen en groensingels. De aanleg wordt aan de oostzijde (Nellissenhofweg) en zuidzijde (Diesterbaan) begrensd door een gracht en een hoge aarden wal met begroeiing. De muur en de gracht zijn aangelegd om de begrenzing van de Lichtenberg te markeren. Het entreeplein vormt de toegang van waaruit de verschillende onderdelen van het complex via paden kunnen worden bereikt. Vanaf het entreeplein leidt een hoofdweg naar het hart van het complex. Deze hoofdweg loopt langs de kleine begroeide omwalling van het zwembad en langs de begroeide heuvel die voor de tribune van het theater is opgeworpen. Hiermee heeft deze doorgang een besloten karakter gekregen. Het tweede centrale punt is het middengebied dat een min of meer centrale positie inneemt met een relatief open karakter. Hier worden het theatergebouw ten noorden, het zwembad ten zuiden, de kapel ten noordoosten en de tennisbanen ten oosten met elkaar verbonden door middel van een padenstelsel. Bijzonder element is een flauw slingerende waterloop die onderdeel is van de waterhuishouding, met aan de uiteinden als afronding kleine waterpoelen. Deze hoofdwaterloop bevindt zich tussen slingerpaden naar de kapel. Een kleine waterpoel (thans niet herkenbaar) vóór de kapel zorgde voor een maximale ruimtelijke werking van de hoger gelegen kapel. De waterhuishouding (grachten, zwembad, besproeiing tennisbanen) is geregeld via een leidingstelsel dat aansluit op de Zuid-Willemsvaart waaruit het benodigde water wordt betrokken. Pompen maakten onderdeel uit van het stelsel en waren nodig om de hoogteverschillen te overbruggen. Om de watertoevoer te garanderen werden, buiten het complex de Lichtenberg, kleine reservoirs, zoals een nabij gelegen vijver, aangelegd. De waterhuishouding is geconsolideerd. Dit waterstelsel voedde ook het zwembad, gelegen op een terrein dat aan twee zijden door groensingels afgesloten wordt. Aan de zijde van de Diesterbaan loopt een gracht en een begroeide wal. De tennisbanen, gesitueerd in de zuidoosthoek van het de aanleg worden afgeschermd door een kleine, beplante verhoging. De ruimtelijke structuur van De Lichtenberg is in hoofdlijnen ongewijzigd en de oorspronkelijke samenhang tussen de verschillende onderdelen binnen het ensemble is behouden. De hoogteverschillen en groenaanleg en het landschappelijke karakter zijn in hoofdlijnen behouden. De groene inbedding en de vele hoogteverschillen van De Lichtenberg geven het gebied een landschappelijk, geaccidenteerd karakter.

De AANLEG van het recreatiecomplex De Lichtenberg is van algemeen belang

The LAYOUT of the recreation complex De Lichtenberg forms the connecting link between the various sports and recreation facilities. From two central points, the entrance square and the relatively open central area, the terrain has been designed with an artificially created planted hill for the theatre (against the south side of the grandstands), with paths, water courses, planted earth walls and green strips. The layout is bounded on the east side (Nellissenhofweg) and south side (Diesterbaan) by a canal and a high earth wall with planting. The wall and canal were constructed to mark the boundary of the Lichtenberg. The entrance square forms the access from which the various components of the complex can be reached via paths. From the entrance square a main road leads to the heart of the complex. This main road runs along the small planted surrounding wall of the swimming pool and along the planted hill that has been constructed in front of the theatre grandstand. This has given this passage an enclosed character. The second central point is the central area which occupies a more or less central position with a relatively open character.
