Omschrijving

Description
Introduction
GYMNASIUM part of the 'Van Horne' BARRACKS COMPLEX, located within the built-up area of Weert. The gymnasium is situated on the south-eastern side of the site, in the south-western corner. The interior is intact.
Description
GYMNASIUM, with a composite floor plan, consisting of a single-storey main volume, a single-storey volume with an abutting hipped roof and a volume under a flat roof. The two volumes under hipped roofs have overhanging wooden rainwater gutters and are covered with Dutch tiles. They have a façade of brown-yellow brickwork with masonry in Flemish bond, plinth and roll moulding in blended brickwork, finished with a stone band. All steel windows have glazing bars and have stone window sills and lintels. The windows are situated below the eaves and are rectangular unless otherwise stated. The front façade has the following façade arrangement from left to right. On the far left there are four windows. Next to this is a wooden door with a fanlight separated by a stone cantilever, which is supported by two brick columns on either side of the door. To the right of the door there are two windows. Then the volume recedes. In the recessed volume there are eleven window openings. The right façade is blank.
The rear façade has the following façade arrangement from left to right. In the main volume there are eleven windows below the eaves. Then the façade recedes slightly. In the recessed façade section there are seven windows.
The left façade first has a double wooden door with glass, then six windows.
The internal structure is intact. In the interior the following elements are still present: the sports hall, changing room, office space and sanitary facilities with washbasins, executed in terrazzo.
Valuation
The GYMNASIUM, a complex component of the Van Horne BARRACKS COMPLEX, designed by Captain of Engineers A.G. Boost, realised in 1939, is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as part of a good example of the military-historical development of the establishment of barracks in or near cities, connected with the city's development, and as an example of the typological development of barracks. The object has situational value because of the functional-spatial relationship with the other complex components grouped around the central parade ground in a symmetrical arrangement.
From an architectural-historical perspective it is important as a good and well-preserved example of a design by Captain of Engineers A.G. Boost for a complex component of an infantry barracks with regimental headquarters for two battalions, built in a traditionalist style with elements of functional Expressionism.
