Inleiding

Description
Cluster 40.
Introduction
CAPONIÈRE WITH POTERNE as a characteristic frontal component of the Fort at Rijnauwen. A caponnière is a masonry extension on the rampart of a polygonal defence work or an advanced work for and in defence by means of flanking fire for the main rampart of a defence work. A poterne is a covered or bombproof passage that forms a connection between two or more components of a fortification or fort. Sometimes a poterne was not merely a passage, but a generously executed example could also serve other functions, such as temporary accommodation or storage.
Description
CAPONIÈRE on the front or extreme eastern side of the fort, built around 1870 and consisting of a bombproof work assembled from heavy masonry, with one storey, that is embedded in an earthwork lying freely in the moat, approximately equilateral and triangular in form. The caponnière comprises gun casemates and houses a powder magazine. The POTERNE forms a bombproof connection between the bombproof barracks, on the eastern side of the fort and the caponnière. The poterne served a dual function and could in special circumstances accommodate troops. The arched entrance with similar window openings on either side, also gun ports, are situated in a façade on the gorge side, which ends with (virtually) right-angled, sloping retaining walls. Above the poterne there is a bombproof magazine.
Evaluation
The CAPONNIÈRE WITH POTERNE is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline, as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realized from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation means and of fields of fire. This system was supplemented with diverse types of built or constructed (defence) works from different periods that served to or contributed to the closure of non-inundable terrains or other accesses.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building practice, which was based - on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century) - and on the race with increasingly strengthened offensive weapons (19th century).
This concerns a rare, masonry caponnière with poterne, dating from around 1870.
* Ensemble value and situational values, as part of the New Holland Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and as a characteristic frontal component.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because it clearly forms a recognizable part of a fort realized in a single design concept.
* The component is reasonably well preserved because it remains easily recognizable as a built element in the field and as a fort component.
