Inleiding

Introduction

BOMBPROOF BARRACKS, REMISES AND STORAGE AREAS, as part of the advanced Fort at Rijnauwen. A barracks is a residential building for military personnel and their equipment. It was the French who, at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century, introduced the system of quartering soldiers in barracks; barracks became part of forts from that time onwards, but alongside this many were also established as separate structures within or outside built-up areas (cities). The barracks buildings situated within 19th-century forts and other works were usually constructed as bombproof shelters, meaning they were designed to withstand enemy fire. As building material, initially masonry several metres thick was used, and later (reinforced) concrete, while the roof covering and front face(s) were additionally covered with earth. Barracks not situated within forts or other works were buildings either specially erected and fitted for that purpose or not, with accommodation for the (permanent) quartering of military personnel and often also provided with other military facilities, such as drill grounds. The bombproof, earth-covered barracks of the Fort at Rijnauwen is characterised by a broad facade and a second above-ground storey set slightly further back, containing remises and storage areas.

Description

BOMBPROOF BARRACKS, built in 1878 as protection against improved artillery, executed in heavy masonry with vaulted spaces. The structure is covered with a layer of earth and is furthermore surrounded on three sides by earthwork. There are two elongated, superimposed facades on the throat side (west side), the upper one of which is set slightly back. The facade on the ground floor is that of the barracks, which is provided in the middle with a large, nearly semi-circular, arched entrance opening, flanked by some blocked pilasters and which further features rhythmically placed entrances with wooden doors, most with window openings flanked on either side with wooden shutters. Remarkable is the facade line broken backwards on either side. The barracks provided accommodation for approximately 200 men. The facade on the first floor is that of the BOMBPROOF REMISES AND STORAGE AREAS, which were built on the barracks between 1880 and 1886 for the housing of artillery and materiel. The facade on the first floor of the likewise earth-covered remise, positioned further back relative to the ground floor, is provided with rhythmically placed entrance openings with wooden doors. These are accessible via ramps to the roof of the barracks.

Valuation

The BOMBPROOF BARRACKS, REMISES AND STORAGE AREAS of the Fort at Rijnauwen are of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realized from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently reinforced and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation means and of fire zones. This system was supplemented with various types of built or constructed (defence) works from different periods which served to or contributed to the closure of non-inundatable areas or other accesses.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building practice, which is based - on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century) - and on the race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).

This is an example of a large bombproof shelter for military personnel and their materiel with bombproof remises and storage areas on top of it, the whole from the period 1877-1886.

* Ensemble value and situational values, as components of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The structures are representative (characteristic) because they still display the physical features that were the reason for construction at that time and because they are a good example of large-scale shelters in a large fort.

* The structures are fairly well preserved because in terms of structure and physical appearance the main aspects of the condition in the 1880s have been preserved.
