Inleiding

Introduction

BOMBPROOF STORES MAGAZINE above the postern towards the caponier, as an addition to the existing work. Stores magazines are storage places for ammunition for the artillery in forts and other works. Storage was preferably carried out bombproof to prevent loss through impacts of projectiles. The application of earth coverings proved to be an effective means of absorbing or damping the energy. This is the reason why many masonry or concrete structures are provided with an earth layer or a front protection of sand or earth. Depending on the period of construction - and thus the expected impact force of projectiles - the term 'bombproof buildings' was used when they were deemed to be able to withstand a predetermined number of impacts of heavy calibre.

Description

BOMBPROOF STORES MAGAZINE above the postern towards the caponier, which was built around 1880. Bombproof structure of a type bevelled on either side, which is provided with an earth covering on three sides and on top and which has only a facade on the throat side. Flat brick facade with arched entrance. The facade is positioned slightly further back relative to the facade and entrance of the postern. The stores magazine comprises two rooms, with a depth of approximately 6 metres.

Valuation

The BOMBPROOF STORES MAGAZINE above the postern is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realized from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently reinforced and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation means and of fire zones. This system was supplemented with various types of built or constructed (defence) works from different periods which served to or contributed to the closure of non-inundatable areas or other accesses.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building practice, which is based - on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century) - and on the race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).

This is a bombproof storage place for ammunition for the artillery on the postern, dating from around 1880.

* Ensemble value and situational values, as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because it is fairly recognisably added in a slightly later phase to an otherwise largely single-concept realised fort.

* The component is fairly well preserved because it can still be well recognised as a built element in the terrain and because in terms of physical appearance the main aspects of the condition in the 1880s have been preserved.
