Inleiding

- de cultuurhistorische waarde als hoofdkantoor van één van de belangrijkste industrieën van de wederopbouwperiode. Het gebouw is tevens van belang als een vroeg naoorlogs voorbeeld van een flexibel kantoorgebouw dat zowel intern als extern aangepast kan worden aan de dynamische bedrijfsvoering van een groot bedrijf;

- de architectuurhistorische waarde als één van de belangrijkste gebouwen in het naoorlogse oeuvre van de architect W.M. Dudok. Het kantoorgebouw is tevens van belang vanwege de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp waarbij de imposante poort in het hoofdgebouw in combinatie met de drie vleugels, die in een soort u-vorm rond het voorplein zijn gebouwd, een monumentaal entreegebouw voor het achtergelegen fabrieksterrein heeft opgeleverd. Daarnaast kent het gebouw een zorgvuldige detaillering;

Introduction

OFFICE BUILDING consisting of main building with drawing office (1947-1951) and management wing (1956), built as headquarters for De Koninklijke Nederlandse Hoogovens en Staalfabrieken N.V. according to designs by W.M. Dudok (1884-1974). During the Second World War the Hoogovens complex sustained severe war damage. Restoration of the complex received high priority from the government and Hoogovens grew into the country's most important supplier of steel for the reconstruction of the nation. The then headquarters, the villa Blijenhoeve, soon became too small. The management invited four architects in 1947 to make sketch designs for a new representative central headquarters at the entrance of the business premises that could be built in phases. The design by architect Dudok was selected over designs by architects Oud, Roosenburg and Zwiers. For the construction of the new headquarters, a site at the main entrance of the business was available which was intersected by the main access road. Dudok positioned the main building perpendicular to the access road. By building the main building partly over the access road, a monumental gateway building was created that provides access to the business premises behind. At right angles to the north-south oriented main building, the wing with the drawing office was built on the south side. Dudok had designed the L-shaped headquarters in such a way that it could be extended. In 1956 the first extension was completed. This involved the management wing - the so-called 'golden' wing - which was also designed by Dudok. The management wing was positioned on the north side at an angle relative to the main building. With the construction of the management wing, the forecourt was bounded on three sides by a wing and a closed representative entrance courtyard was created. In 1959 a bronze sculpture by A.P. Schaller (1920-1981) was placed above the main entrance of the management wing. The angel, the thinker and the worker embody the harmony of the intellectual and manual work of Hoogovens. Dudok deliberately designed a flexible office building that could both be extended and (internally) adapted to the dynamic steel business. The headquarters has therefore been adapted and altered in various ways over the years, both internally and externally; wings were added (the wings at the rear were built after the 1950s and are not protected), the internal layout was altered and the wing with the drawing office was extended by 8 bays and later converted into a restaurant and conference centre and provided with its own entrance at the rear. In 1999 the headquarters underwent extensive renovation with both interior and exterior being addressed. The building received a new main entrance giving access to a new imposing hall. The forecourt was partially raised so that the courtyard on the side of the main entrance came to be level with the ground floor of the main building. The facade cladding was replaced. The transparent roof of the former drawing office was provided with aluminium roof cladding. With the exception of the windows of the gateway, the steel windows were replaced by aluminium windows with double glazing. The headquarters is still in use by the successor of Hoogovens. Hoogovens is now part of Tata Steel.

Description

The OFFICE BUILDING of the headquarters consists of the elongated main building, the wing originally built for the drawing office and the management wing. The three wings enclose the forecourt. The office building is constructed with a steel frame. The facades have no structural function. This made it possible to detail the facades very flatly to emphasize the plastic effect of the gateway. The materials and colours used reinforce this effect. The facades of the main building and drawing office are clad with flat warm brown tiles. The facades of the management wing and the interior walls of the gateway are clad with flat white Portland limestone cladding. This way these special components distinguish themselves from the rest of the ensemble. The windows set in white (originally narrow) steel frames are placed flush with the facade surface. The elongated main building has six storeys; a basement, four floors and a continuous attic. The storeys are covered by a concrete shell roof. The architecture is clear and neat. The facade articulation is determined by the strict rhythm of the windows of the four floors and reflects the clear layout of the main building. The facades are vertically articulated by the downpipes that run from the roof edge over the full height of the facade. The most characteristic element of the main building is the gateway situated left of centre. The access road to the factory premises behind runs through the gateway. The gateway is designed as an opening in the building extending over the full height of the four floors. The offices on either side of the gateway are connected by an underground passage and three glazed aerial bridges above each other which are recessed and placed in the centre of the gateway. The roof edge above the gateway and the glazed aerial bridges rest on white steel pillars. The name KONINKLIJKE HOOGOVENS is applied in yellow steel letters to the glazed facade of the aerial bridges. By making the gateway higher than necessary for passing traffic, cladding the interior facades of the gateway with white natural stone and executing the gateway infill in glass, a monumental passage was created which, by its scale and transparency, gives the massive main building a certain lightness. Originally the main building was accessed via an entrance with a broad flight of steps and an undulating canopy on slanted columns situated in the first bay north of the gateway. This main entrance has however been replaced by a new entrance arrangement shifted to the north. The wing originally designed for the drawing office has two storeys. The north facade of this wing has a transparent character through the large windows extending over the two storeys. Originally this wing had an elongated, concave roof light on steel trusses, which provided uniform lighting from above for the workstations in the drawing office. The management wing has three storeys. The management wing is also designed neatly and clearly but appears less massive because the facades of the lower two storeys are clad with flat white natural stone panels. The upper storey is executed in the same brown tiles as the rest of the headquarters. The ground floor and first floor are extended on the east side towards the water. This part of the wing projects over the lower-lying green area and rests on two white steel columns. A single door giving access to a small balcony with steel railings is the only opening in the otherwise blank facade of the extension. In the interior, the airy steel spiral staircase in the main building is important. This staircase is located in the traffic space where the entrance hall originally was.

Valuation

The OFFICE BUILDING built as headquarters for De Koninklijke Nederlandse Hoogovens en Staalfabrieken N.V. is of general importance as an essential example of the early Reconstruction period from 1940 because of:

- the cultural-historical value as headquarters of one of the most important industries of the reconstruction period. The building is also significant as an early post-war example of a flexible office building that can be adapted both internally and externally to the dynamic business operations of a large company;

- the architectural-historical value as one of the most important buildings in the post-war oeuvre of architect W.M. Dudok. The office building is also significant because of the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design whereby the imposing gateway in the main building in combination with the three wings, which are built in a sort of u-shape around the forecourt, has created a monumental entrance building to the factory premises behind. Furthermore, the building features careful detailing;

- the urban design value through the positioning of the wings which enclose the entrance courtyard on three sides, thereby creating a striking representative entrance courtyard that provides access to the factory premises behind.
