Omschrijving
Description
Introduction
Former SERVICE DWELLING of the head gardener, forming part of the 'Westerhout' complex. The building was constructed in 1941 to designs by Zaan architect W.A. van Gogh. The interior is reportedly still largely in its original condition, but could not be described due to objections from the occupant.
Description
A dwelling house built on a rectangular ground plan, comprising two storeys, beneath a gabled roof with the ridge line parallel to the road. To the right of the dwelling house is a recessed garage connected to the dwelling house by a linking section. Both the garage and the linking section have rectangular floor plans, a height of one storey, and gabled roofs. The gabled roof of the linking section has its ridge line parallel to the road; the ridge of the garage roof is perpendicular to the road. All three roofs are covered with dampened improved Dutch tiles. At the bottom of the roof planes are zinc gutters. The overhanging eaves of the dwelling house and the linking section rest on moulded brackets. The outer walls, built in half-brick bond with flush jointing, are raised above a plinth of red machine-made facing bricks in yellow handmade brick (approximately 22 x 4.5 cm format). The rear and side gables of the garage, however, are built in Flemish bond from approximately 1.60 metres wall height. On the ridge of the dwelling house, to the right of centre, stands a rectangular chimney of yellow handmade brick. The windows of the dwelling house and the linking section have sandstone sills and shutters fitted with diagonal rebated boards.
In the front facade (SE) of the dwelling house there is, from right to left, a four-pane hopper window, a small round window with diamond-patterned leaded glass, and a window projecting from the facade plane with, on the sloping sides, a narrow window and along the top a cornice. The latter window is supported by a segmental arch. At the level of the floor of the upper storey are two ornamental wall anchors. The first floor has on the left and right a four-pane window. Both gable end walls are provided with a four-pane attic window (without shutters) and accolade-shaped moulded wind braces. In the left side facade (SW) to the right of centre is a long ground-floor window containing a four-pane hopper window flanked by two-pane side lights and above it on the upper floor a four-pane hopper window. The right side facade (NE) has on the left a two-pane ground-floor window. To the right of this a sandstone foundation stone has been set in the wall with the inscription "L.G. BOREEL / 17 MEI 1941". The linking section adjoining the right half of the facade has on the front right a four-pane hopper window with shutters as mentioned and on the left a porch containing a door with above it a four-pane window. The porch floor is laid as a step paved with red bricks on their flat side. The rear facade (NW) of the linking section is provided with the same window and door as on the front, but mirrored (a porch is absent). Adjacent to this, the rear facade of the dwelling house has, from left to right, a WC window, a cellar window secured with burglar bars and a small round window containing a tilting window with diamond-patterned leaded glass (all three windows lack shutters). At the level of the first floor there is on the left a small window (without shutters) and on the right a four-pane window with a two-pane window to the left of it.
The gable front and rear facades of the garage are both executed as spout gables with shoulders and a small attic window. In the front facade (SE) is a clamped double garage door hung on heavy strap hinges. This door is supported by a segmental arch beneath which ornamental brickwork of yellow headers is visible. The right side facade (NE) of the garage has three high-placed round-arched three-pane windows fitted with burglar bars. In the left side facade (SW) of the garage on the left is a diagonally rebated barn door hung on two heavy strap hinges and provided with a chamfered fanlight. To the right of this the garage roof has an attached lean-to roof resting at the corner on a post. The post, placed on a plinth of red brick, is fitted with two moulded corbels. At the corners where the lean-to roof abuts against the wall of the garage and of the linking section there is likewise a moulded corbel.
Valuation
The former service dwelling of the head gardener is of general importance by virtue of its architectural and cultural-historical values as a historically-functional component of the 'Westerhout' complex, built in the style of the Delft School to designs by W.A. van Gogh.
