Inleiding

Description
Introduction
FILTER BUILDING from 1914-1915, forming part of the water supply complex Evertsenstraat.
N.B. The later extensions against the left side gable of the filter building fall outside the protection.
Description
The single-storey filter building consists of a rectangular main volume beneath a gabled roof with brown-glazed moulded tiles and the ridge line perpendicular to, and against the right side gable (N) thereof a lower extension provided with a flat roof. The building has a reinforced concrete skeleton, supplemented with brick masonry. The masonry is above a plinth of flush-jointed red machine-made wall bricks and to approximately one-third of the facade height executed in red machine-made wall brick in header bond with cut joint. Above this the masonry is plastered. The windows have brown-glazed drip edge tiles and are relieved by a course of contrasting red brick. The side gables of the main volume are terminated at the top by a cornice gutter on profiled corbels beneath which runs a course of red brick with plastered panels. Below the course runs a moulding of brown-glazed profile stone. The latter extends as does the course also over the end front and rear gable which are clad with hardstone. The windows are executed in iron. The front facade (E) is divided by four columns into three bays. In the wide middle bay is situated a large double panel door above which two nine-light windows and in the gable peak three narrow tall ten-light windows. The door, divided vertically into two, has in both upper doors a segmental twelve-light window. The narrow side bays are provided with three windows one above the other (the uppermost eight-light, the remainder twelve-light).
Both side gables of the main volume are divided by columns into five bays. The left side gable (S) has in each bay not concealed (partly) by the later extensions a spandrel in which three pairs of windows one above the other (the uppermost nine-light, the remainder twelve-light). The upper portion of the right side gable (N) projecting above the extension is provided per bay with two nine-light windows.
The rear gable (W) is virtually identical to the front facade, but has in the right bay a door and in the middle bay a spandrel in which three pairs of windows one above the other. The extension projecting further to the rear by one bay has in the bay in front of it a door with above it three six-light horizontal windows. Because the left bay of the extension is somewhat narrower, it has only one twelve-light window, while the remaining bays are provided with two twelve-light windows. In the narrow front side of the extension are situated three twelve-light windows.
The INTERIOR of the main volume consists of one undivided space beneath a concrete roof truss resting on four concrete triangular trusses. Both in this space and in the extension the columns of the concrete skeleton are provided at the top with a console upon which a rail rests over which a crane runs.
In the rear half of the space stand six tall cylindrical iron water tanks (the three tanks on the right in the front half have been removed). The right side wall is provided with some nine-light windows and an arched double door to the extension. The latter has a flat concrete roof with in the centre a small skylight in the form of a gabled roof of wire glass. The floor level in the front half of the extension is situated at approximately 6 m below ground level and accessible via an iron step ladder (with halfway landing) along the left side wall.
Valuation
The filter building with associated interior is of general interest as a historical-functional component of the water supply complex Evertsenstraat; as a largely intact preserved example of a filter building from the 1910s of the 20th century, executed in reinforced concrete skeleton construction combined with traditional architectural principles; by reason of its industrial value; by reason of its ensemble value in relation to the other components of the complex and the green landscaping.
