Inleiding
Boks i.s.m. W.Eijkelenboom & A. Middelhoek.
- de cultuurhistorisch waarden, als typerend wederopbouw toonbeeld: al tijdens de bezetting werd besloten dat dit nieuwe informatiecentrum over bouwen en wonen in Rotterdam (als centrum van de Wederopbouw) moest worden gerealiseerd. Het Bouwcentrum had zijn bekendheid in binnen- en buitenland deels te danken aan het ronde expositie- en tentoonstellingsgebouw. Een representatief gebouw voor het gehele Nederlandse bouwwezen en zijn grote mogelijkheden;
- de architectuurhistorische waarden, vanwege het ingenieus ontwerp met een hoge architectonische kwaliteit;
- de architectuurhistorische waarden, als een voorbeeld van Shake-hands architectuur waarin een compromis is gesloten tussen traditioneel en modern. Het traditionele baksteen is modern toegepast en het beton expressionistisch vormgeven;
- de architectuurhistorische waarden, als eerste object dat ontworpen werd door de architect J.W.C. Boks ten behoeve van het Nederlandsch Bouwcentrum;

Description
Introduction
The former BOUWCENTRUM is the first office and exhibition building of the Nederlandsch Bouwcentrum, the information centre for laypeople and professionals about building products and rational building methods. Intensively documented information about developments in building technology was of great importance for the reconstruction of the Netherlands. The exhibition spaces were intended for all kinds of building materials such as artificial stone, ceramic products, binders, glass, wood, iron and steel, chemical products, non-ferrous metals, fibrous materials, natural stone and there was a space for foreign participation.
Based on exhibition-technical and urban planning considerations, a floor plan consisting of a regular sixteen-sided polygon was chosen and no windows were placed in the external walls. Instead of artificial light, daylight was admitted from above in the centre of the building through the dish-shaped roof structure, supported by 8 columns, with a diameter of 32 metres. Closed by a perimeter light crown. This provided direct and indirect light throughout the entire exhibition space. The light reflected against the hollow underside of the dish and as the floors are higher, it becomes narrower, so the light even reached the ground floor.
Plans for the Nederlandsch Bouwcentrum were made relatively quickly after the devastating bombardment of 14 May 1940. Architect J.W.C. Boks built an inventive building between 1946 and 1948 using simple materials. On 18 May 1949, Opbouwdag (the annual celebration of reconstruction in Rotterdam), the Bouwcentrum was opened by Queen Juliana.
The Bouwcentrum is located on a site, diagonally opposite Central Station, between the Diergaardesingel, the Weena and the Kruisplein. Originally the main entrance of the Bouwcentrum was on the Vitruviusstraat. Now this is a small enclosed square. The Bouwcentrum stood for a time in open land next to the preserved old buildings at the fire boundary of the inner city and in sight of the Groothandelsgebouw. Today the building is wedged between a number of tall buildings at the Kruisplein, the later expansions of the Bouwcentrum in the nineteen fifties and sixties. The square and the entrance of the Bouwcentrum can be reached from the Kruisplein via an underpass.
Due to the enormous national and international interest in the Bouwcentrum, an expansion followed in 1955-1956 by J.W.C. Boks at the Weena (with a masonry relief by American artist Henry Moore). For this, a rectangular building mass was connected to the circular floor plan of the Bouwcentrum via a connecting section of two storeys. In 1991 the facades of this building were altered in such a way that the original character was compromised. In 1967-1970 another expansion followed at the Kruisplein by J.W.C. Boks in collaboration with W.Eijkelenboom & A. Middelhoek. These buildings fall outside the protection.
New windows have been placed in the sixteen-sided base of the central building in the original pattern of the masonry. The facade areas have been filled with new masonry and new windows. The entrance at the Diergaardesingel (west facade) has been closed. The original vertical wall was changed into a sloping wall and the entrance and staircase have disappeared. In 2000 the central building was renovated by Schiller Architects.
Description
The BOUWCENTRUM consists of an office and exhibition building on a sixteen-sided floor plan with a broad extension on the east side and two segment-shaped extensions on the west side with a connecting section. The building consists of four storeys, the uppermost of which is intended for light admission.
The building consists of a sixteen-sided closed base structure with a smaller superstructure consisting of a crown of glass under a dish-shaped roof. The mushroom-like construction of concrete ribs is visible in the exterior. In the base these are the sixteen ribs of the closed facade wall and in the superstructure the sixteen air arches.
The space between the concrete columns is filled with masonry in the base, originally laid in decorative bond to emphasize the non-load-bearing function. In the superstructure, filling with glass has been provided.
The main entrance is located on the east facade of the building and consists of a stepped extension at the height of the first and second storeys. The entrance is accessible by several steps. The extensions on the west facade of the building span the first and second storeys and consist of high halls. Between these a lower building section where the café-restaurant was originally located.
In the interior the concrete skeleton is visible. Along the walls of the ground floor, first and second floors are wide galleries with far-projecting floors (7 metres) for exhibitions, with walkways alongside. In the core are exhibition spaces over three storeys. In the centre are various floors, which are at different heights relative to the galleries. The height differences are intended for spatial effect and clarity of the large space. The floors and galleries are interconnected by stairs, always with a small number of steps. The upper gallery is connected to the central floor via three bridges. The dish-shaped roof is lifted by a crown of glass, which allows daylight to enter. The light dome consists of 1025 glass tiles set in reinforced concrete.
In the extensions are the office spaces for management and administration. Various rooms for lighting, research and documentation, reading room, meeting room and a lecture room with gallery are also located here. Originally located on the ground floor, diametrically opposite the main entrance, was a café-restaurant with a summer terrace outside.
Appreciation
The BOUWCENTRUM, consisting of the sixteen-sided office and exhibition building of the Nederlandsch Bouwcentrum, built in 1946-1949 and designed by J.W.C. Boks, is an obvious milestone in the development of architecture and building technology in the Netherlands from the period 1940-1958. The Bouwcentrum is of importance because of:
- its cultural-historical values, as a typical reconstruction showcase: already during the occupation it was decided that this new information centre about building and housing in Rotterdam (as centre of the Reconstruction) had to be realized. The Bouwcentrum owed its fame at home and abroad partly to the round exhibition and exhibition building. A representative building for the entire Dutch construction industry and its great possibilities;
- its architectural-historical values, because of its ingenious design with high architectural quality;
- its architectural-historical values, as an example of Handshake architecture in which a compromise was reached between traditional and modern. Traditional brick is applied in a modern way and concrete given expressionistic form;
- its architectural-historical values, as the first object designed by architect J.W.C. Boks for the Nederlandsch Bouwcentrum;
- its urban planning values, because the round building at the end of the nineteen forties was one of the first new buildings after the bombardment in 1940.
