Inleiding
Voor het warenhuis De Bijenkorf gesitueerde grote SCULPTUUR zonder titel, ter identificering in de literatuur aangeduid als 'Bijenkorf Construction' en in de loop der jaren voorzien van vele bijnamen waaronder 'De gestileerde bloem' en 'Het Ding', onderdeel van het complex De Bijenkorf. Het beeld werd vervaardigd in 1956-1957 op basis van een tekening en modellen van de uit Rusland afkomstige Amerikaanse kunstenaar Naum Gabo in de constructiewerkplaatsen en machinefabriek 'Hollandia"' in Krimpen aan den IJssel, waarbij technisch advies werd ingewonnen bij TNO in Delft. Het kunstwerk werd onthuld op 21 mei 1957. Het gaat om het grootste moderne kunstwerk in de openbare ruimte in die tijd, dat behalve de ongebruikelijke omvang ook vanwege de vooruitstrevende vormgeving, op basis van door Gabo en anderen ontwikkelde constructivistische principes, opzien baarde. Het fungeert als aanvulling op de architectuur van het warenhuis en, door kunstverlichting ook na zonsondergang, als markerend element in het stadsbeeld. Het beeld is in 1960-61 gerestaureerd.
Omschrijving
De SCULPTUUR is opgesteld aan de Coolsingel voor de zuidoostelijke gevelhoek van het warenhuis. Het beeld meet ruim 26 meter en staat op een bijbehorende, tweedelige en met natuursteen beklede sokkel. De totale hoogte van het object komt ongeveer overeen met de gevelhoogte van het achtergelegen warenhuis. Het kunstwerk staat los van het gebouw maar is in aanvulling op de architectuur ontworpen waarbij de open, organische vormen van de sculptuur contrasteren met de in hoge mate gesloten natuursteen gevel op de achtergrond. De achtergrond van het beeld wordt, afhankelijk van het standpunt van de beschouwer, ook gevormd door het straatbeeld en de lucht. De constructie is opgebouwd uit metaal; uit stalen ribben die voorzien zijn van een laag brons en uit zwart koperdraad. Het beeld bestaat uit een open, afhankelijk van de bewegelijkheid van de beschouwer dynamische ruimtelijke constructie van twee lineaire hoofdvormen; een inwendige zwartgekleurde structuur en een bronskleurige grotere uitwendige langgerekte vorm. De sokkel is uitgevoerd in beton bekleed met een glanzend gepolijst zwart Zweeds graniet (gabbro). Het beeld kan, zoals oorspronkelijk bedoeld, van onderaf worden verlicht door middel van armaturen die in de sokkel zijn verwerkt.
Waardering
De SCULPTUUR naar ontwerp van N.Gabo, ontwikkeld en gemaakt tussen 1954-1957, onderdeel van het complex 'De Bijenkorf', vertegenwoordigt algemeen belang als mijlpaal in de beeldende kunst van de Wederopbouwperiode vanwege:
- de cultuurhistorische betekenis als symbool voor de wederopbouw en de overwinning op de vernietiging. Het beeld wordt beschouwd als visuele metafoor van wedergeboorte en het geloof in de techniek, door de direct aan de vormgeving verbonden associaties. For the department store De Bijenkorf situated large SCULPTURE without title, for identification in the literature designated as 'Bijenkorf Construction' and over the years provided with many nicknames including 'The stylised flower' and 'The Thing', part of the De Bijenkorf complex. Description
The SCULPTURE is positioned at the Coolsingel in front of the southeastern corner of the department store facade. The sculpture measures just over 26 metres and stands on an associated, two-part base clad with natural stone. The total height of the object corresponds approximately to the facade height of the underlying department store. The artwork stands separately from the building but was designed as a complement to the architecture whereby the open, organic forms of the sculpture contrast with the highly closed natural stone facade in the background. The background of the sculpture is, depending on the viewpoint of the observer, also formed by the streetscape and the sky. The construction is built from metal; from steel ribs which are provided with a layer of bronze and from black copper wire. The sculpture consists of an open, depending on the mobility of the observer dynamic spatial construction of two linear main forms; an internal black-coloured structure and a bronze-coloured larger external elongated form. The base is executed in concrete clad with a glossy polished black Swedish granite (gabbro). The sculpture can, as originally intended, be lit from below by means of fixtures which are integrated into the base.
Valuation
The SCULPTURE to the design of N. Gabo, developed and made between 1954-1957, part of the 'De Bijenkorf' complex, represents general interest as a milestone in the visual arts of the Reconstruction period on account of:
- the cultural-historical significance as a symbol for reconstruction and the triumph over destruction. The sculpture is regarded as a visual metaphor of rebirth and faith in technology, through the associations directly connected to the design.
