Inleiding
(Jo) Boer (1895-1971) in shake hands architectuur.
- zijn cultuurhistorische waarde, als oudste fabrieksgebouw op het nieuwe naoorlogse industrieterrein aan de Houkesloot in Sneek;
- zijn pionierswaarde op het terrein van de economische geschiedenis en als symboolwaarde voor het economische herstel van Noord- Nederland na de Tweede Wereldoorlog;
- zijn stedenbouwkundige waarde vanwege de beeldbepalende ligging van de fabriek aan de toegangsweg naar Sneek komend vanuit Joure;
- zijn opvallende architectonische verschijningsvorm en de kleurrijke uitmonstering met onder meer gele baksteen en de witte banden van het betonskelet;
- zijn architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van het Functionalisme gecombineerd met traditionele elementen en als magnum opus in het oeuvre van architect Jo Boer;
- zijn bouwtechnische betekenis is gelegen in de toepassing van voorgespannen beton in de geschakelde schuingeplaatste schaaldakconstructie van de bedrijfshal;

Description
Introduction
Situated on the industrial estate at the Houkesloot in Sneek, a composite FACTORY BUILDING designed by architect J.A. (Jo) Boer (1895-1971) in functionalist architecture. On the basis of the Prosperity Report of the Economic Technological Institute Friesland from 1950, Sneek is assigned an important economic position after the war. Alongside Leeuwarden, Drachten, Heerenveen and Harlingen, Sneek is designated as an industrial hub. This brings with it a financial stimulus that enables the municipality to invest in infrastructure and the construction of industrial estates. At the same time it is a stimulus for businesses to avoid the cramped city centres and seek refuge in new industrial estates with many opportunities for expansion.
The Tonnema confectionery factory is the first to establish itself on this site, located in a strategic position on the national highway A7, the access road from Joure to Sneek. The new confectionery factory, situated on a site of over 5,000 m2, takes shape during the years 1949 - 1955 in several construction phases. Numerous extensions follow to the present day. Construction begins with a goods shed in 1949. Then follow two double storage sheds, a detached one in 1950, where in 1952 a second shed is built next to it. A renovation in 1954 connects the two double sheds with the detached goods shed and provides the whole with a new facade in yellow facing brick. In 1955 a renovation follows and a large extension on the south side with factory halls with shed roofs for the production of Rangsnoepjes and Kingpepermunt (production hall). This change gives the factory a traditional appearance, but the white concrete bands between and as a finish to the facades reveal the application of hyper-modern building techniques: pumice and shock concrete, steel and concrete roof truss structures and concrete shell roofs with sloping glazed lights filled with prefabricated concrete frames with glass tiles that ensure ample daylight entry into the factory hall. Hyper-modern window forms are also applied in other places, making daylight entry here spectacular. The entrance section acquires a functionalist appearance with its enormous glazed frontages. Jo Boer remains "house architect" of Tonnema for more than twenty-five years, until the construction of the new King factory in 1964, for which the commission is awarded to Margry & Jacobs from Rotterdam. The latest extension dates from 2002 and concerns the space for the production of chewing gum on the eastern side of the factory. These extensions, respectively on the south-eastern and north-eastern side of the factory, do not fall under protection. Incidentally, the offices remain housed at the old address at the Kleinzand, until in 1978 a new office is realized at the Oppenhuizerweg. The factory still has its original function (2010). To maintain the function, among other things, the facade infill at the (current) canteen has been renewed. Various installations have also been placed on the roofs.
Description
The factory building has a composite floor plan consisting of a single-storey elongated structure of two blocks with respectively four and nine bays. The front four sheds have gabled roofs and gable end walls, then follows the large production hall which is crowned by nine sheds with concrete shell roofs. In the front roof panels, elongated light panels with glass roof glazing bars provide daylight entry. The sheds have obliquely placed prefabricated concrete frames filled with glass tiles. The fourth bay of the first block projects out at the rear to the width of the production hall. The facades are infilled with yellow facing brick between white concrete bands that mark the structure: portal frames with a concrete foundation and steel roof truss structure are applied in the front sheds and the nine halls have a concrete skeleton consisting of pillars and beams on which the curved shed roofs are mounted in a skeleton constructed from pre-stressed concrete beams and curved frames.
The various building components also have different functions that are discernible from the facades. On the urban, northern side is the entrance for the office and factory spaces. This elegant and representative entrance section is placed transversely across the halls behind and consists of a large, spreading canopy with a wooden roof covering supported by a number of slender iron columns on concrete bases, which flow smoothly into the actual entrance. The entrance has enormous glass frontages on three sides in a wooden glazing bar pattern. In the front facade there are three large double doors. The first two volumes, originally intended for dispatch and packaging, house the reception and office spaces on the eastern side, on the western side are the changing rooms, storage and toilet facilities for staff located on either side of a central hall that divides the entire factory space in two. In the following halls are respectively storage spaces in the east and two large common rooms in the west. Here the facades feature simple concrete four-light windows. The production of confectionery took place in the spaces under the shed roofs. The gable ends of the sheds have a recumbent rectangular window at ground level, the top lintel of which is in line with the lintels of the other volumes. In the roof a porthole is installed which, with its strongly projecting frame, reinforces the rhythm in the facades. The building terminates on the south side with a two-storey rectangular building volume with a segmental arch roof intended as a machine room and boiler room. The facades are provided with decorative brickwork. The facade openings consist of glass tile concrete frames at ground level with arched windows in the front facade just below the roof. Halfway up the facade, at the level of the floor, a series of geometric elements made of concrete blocks runs as a belt around the building, consisting of a pattern of concrete squares filled with glass, so-called claustra. This strip of windows is nowadays filled in. Just above this band, various drainage pipes are installed in the facade. On the first floor in the south facade a door with hoist opening over which a walkway is now installed providing access to the new building from 1964.
The interior of the factory features in the production area elongated halls with a system of concrete columns placed in line on either side of a wide central corridor. These spaces are equipped with various machines for the manufacture of confectionery. Also in the corridor, the walls, like the facades outside, consist of yellow facing brick in which various larger and smaller window sections and doors are incorporated. On the production side, the walls and the inside of the roof are whitewashed. On the floors are grey tiles which are placed crosswise in pairs so that a pattern of squares is created. In the entrance, storage and office section, again on both sides of this corridor, subdivision into rooms is provided. In the hall, the roof truss structure of curved concrete portal frames is visible in various places.
Valuation
The Tonnema factory in Sneek is of general importance, a milestone in the development of architecture, urban planning and building technology and an essential exemplar of the post-war reconstruction period in the Netherlands because of:
- its cultural-historical value, as the oldest factory building on the new post-war industrial estate at the Houkesloot in Sneek;
- its pioneering value in the field of economic history and as symbol value for the economic recovery of North Netherlands after the Second World War;
- its urban planning value due to the visually defining location of the factory on the access road to Sneek coming from Joure;
- its striking architectural appearance and colourful finish with among other things yellow brick and the white bands of the concrete skeleton;
- its architectural-historical value as an example of Functionalism combined with traditional elements and as the magnum opus in the oeuvre of architect Jo Boer;
- its building technical significance lies in the application of pre-stressed concrete in the interconnected obliquely placed shell roof structure of the factory hall;
