Inleiding
De Winkel van Sinkel - onderdeel van diergaarde Blijdorp - kwam naar het ontwerp van ir. S. van Ravesteyn tot stand in 1939-1941. Het object, van oorsprong verkooppunt van briefkaarten, snoep en souvenirs, is gesitueerd aan de oostzijde van het diergaardeterrein, tussen de voormalige ingang en het roofdierengebouw op de centrale as. Het gebouw is vormgegeven in functionalistische stijl en voorzien van figuratieve decoraties.
NB Thans is het gebouw als dierenverblijf in gebruik, waardoor de oorspronkelijke gedaante en afwerking aan het zicht is onttrokken. Rondom het gebouw bevonden zich oorspronkelijk plantenborders.
Omschrijving
De WINKEL VAN SINKEL (11) is gebouwd op cirkelvormige grondslag, kent een betonnen basis en wordt afgedekt door een plat dak. Niet meer zichtbaar, maar wel nog aanwezig, zijn vensters boven een betonnen borstwering en tussen halfronde, betonnen kolommen aan de noordzijde van het gebouw. Boven de vensters is een luifel opgenomen die de contouren van het gebouw volgt. De zuidelijke helft van het gebouw kent doorlopende kolommen waartussen betonnen gevelvlakken met ruitmotief en verschillende soorten gevelopeningen. De dakrand is verlevendigd met metalen aapsculpturen en profil van de kunstenaar Pieter den Besten.
Waardering
De WINKEL VAN SINKEL is van algemeen belang:
- het object heeft architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege het materiaalgebruik, de toegepaste verhoudingen, de vormgeving en de verzorgde detaillering;
- als karakteristiek voorbeeld van multidisciplinaire kunsttoepassingen;

Introduction
The Winkel van Sinkel - component of Diergaarde Blijdorp - was built to the design of ir. S. van Ravesteyn in 1939-1941. The object, originally a sales point for postcards, sweets and souvenirs, is situated on the east side of the zoo grounds, between the former entrance and the big cats building on the central axis. The building is designed in functionalist style and provided with figurative decorations.
NB The building is currently in use as an animal enclosure, which means the original appearance and finish are obscured from view. Originally planting borders were located around the building.
Description
The WINKEL VAN SINKEL (11) is built on a circular ground plan, has a concrete base and is covered by a flat roof. No longer visible, but still present, are windows above a concrete parapet and between semicircular, concrete columns on the north side of the building. Above the windows a canopy is included that follows the contours of the building. The southern half of the building has continuous columns between which concrete facade panels with a diamond motif and various types of facade openings. The roof edge is enlivened with metal monkey sculptures and profile by the artist Pieter den Besten.
