Inleiding
De vijver met dierenverblijven - onderdeel van diergaarde Blijdorp - kwam naar het ontwerp van S. van Ravesteyn tot stand in 1939-1941. Het ensemble bestaande uit bassins voor zeezoogdieren en ijsberen met daaraan grenzend een met terrassen omzoomde vijver, is gesitueerd op de centrale as ten noorden van de Rivièrahal. Het is gebouwd in functionalistische stijl, gecombineerd met neobarokke elementen. In 1943 werd het zeeleeuwenbassin vernield door een verdwaalde brisantbom bedoeld voor de naastgelegen spoorbaan. Het zeeleeuwenbassin was grofweg halfrond van vorm en voorzien van een rondgang die boven het water zweefde. In het midden bevond zich een sierlijk gevormde, kunstmatige rots in de vorm van een golf. Recent is het ijsberenverblijf heringericht als verblijf voor tijgers.
Omschrijving
VIJVER MET DIERENVERBLIJVEN EN TERRASSEN (5). De vorm van de vijver doet - vooral in de oorspronkelijke situatie - denken aan die van een vlinder: symmetrisch, enigszins trapeziumvormig en heel sierlijk. De vijver, grenzend aan de dierenverblijven in de bassins aan de noordzijde en aan het terras van de Rivièrahal aan de zuidzijde, is als open plek zeer bepalend voor de routing van het publiek door de dierentuin. Op de hoeken en langs het terras is de vijver voorzien van opengewerkte betonnen borstweringen. Van hieruit leiden betonnen trappen naar de lager gelegen terrassen aan de flanken van de vijver en wandelpaden naar de 'rotondes' om van richting te kunnen veranderen. De rand van de vijver is afgewerkt met een geprofileerde betonnen rand. Aan de noordzijde, op de plek van het zeeleeuwenbassin bevindt zich een halfrond plateau met een buiten- en binnenverblijf. Aan weerszijde van het plateau bevinden zich twee loopbruggen, opgetrokken uit betonnen kolommen, houten plankieren en smeedijzeren, sierlijke vormgegeven balustrades. Ze bieden thans geen zicht meer op drie langgerekte bassins aan de noordzijde ervan, maar op dierenverblijven die naderhand in de betreffende bassins zijn aangebracht.

The pond, bordering the animal enclosures in the basins on the north side and the terrace of the Rivièrahal on the south side, is as an open space very determining for the routing of the public through the zoo. On the corners and along the terrace, the pond is provided with open-worked concrete parapets. From here, concrete stairs lead to the lower lying terraces on the flanks of the pond and walkways to the 'rotundas' to change direction. The edge of the pond is finished with a profiled concrete edge. On the north side, on the site of the sea lion basin, is a semicircular platform with an outdoor and indoor enclosure. On either side of the platform are two footbridges, constructed from concrete columns, wooden planking and wrought-iron, elegantly designed balustrades. They now no longer afford a view of three elongated basins to their north, but of animal enclosures that were subsequently installed in the basins in question.
