Inleiding
Het berentheater - onderdeel van diergaarde Blijdorp - kwam naar het ontwerp van S. van Ravesteyn tot stand in 1939-1941. Het gebouw is gesitueerd aan het zuideinde van de centrale as. Het werd gebouwd in functionalistische stijl, gecombineerd met neobarokke elementen. Het was van oudsher bedoeld om beren in onder te brengen en bestaat uit dierenverblijven met een terras ervoor. Aan weerszijden van de dierenverblijven bevinden zich dienstgebouwen.
Omschrijving
Het BERENTHEATER MET AANPALENDE DIENSTGEBOUWEN (3) beslaat een rechthoekige, doch iets halfrond gebogen plattegrond. In het midden bevindt zich het terras dat het bouwvolume aan de noordzijde onderbreekt.
De contouren ervan zijn thans niet meer goed herkenbaar. Van oudsher was het verdiept gelegen betonnen terras aan de voorzijde omgeven door een betonnen borstwering. De zijkanten zijn nog te herkennen aan gestucte zijmuren die vanuit de achterwand naar voren steken. De zijmuren zijn golvend van vorm en worden vooraan beëindigd door een verdikking waarop van oorsprong een bolvormige bekroning aanwezig was. De gestucte achterwand van het theater is vrij gesloten en voorzien een wafelpatroon. In het midden is de ingang naar de verblijven opgenomen terwijl in de hoeken met de zijwanden hoge kolommen zijn opgetrokken in beton.
De gebouwen achter en aan weerszijden van het terras zijn opgetrokken uit gele verblendsteen. Ze worden bekroond door een zadeldak dat deels met rode en deels met gesmoorde dakpannen is bekleed. Aan de kant van de tuin zijn de gevels blind. De verspringende, langgerekte gevel aan de zijde van het dienstterrein kent ter plaatste van het berenterras de oorspronkelijke opstand met een aantal originele rondlichten. De overige gevels zijn gewijzigd. Ter hoogte van de begane grond tonen ze schoon metselwerk en daarboven rabatdelen. De kopgevel aan de oostzijde kent een rechthoekig venster, terwijl de westelijke kopgevel blind is. Aan de westelijk kopgevel bevindt zich een in gele verblendsteen opgetrokken muur eindigend met een gemetselde hekpijler met daarop een natuurstenen kegel. De muur is afgedekt met rode holle dakpannen.

The bear theater - part of zoo Blijdorp - was built according to the design of S. van Ravensteyn in 1939-1941. The building is situated at the south end of the central axis. It was built in functionalist style, combined with neo-baroque elements. It was originally intended to house bears and consists of animal enclosures with a terrace in front. On either side of the animal enclosures are service buildings.
Description
The BEAR THEATER WITH ADJACENT SERVICE BUILDINGS (3) covers a rectangular, but slightly half-round floor plan. In the middle is the terrace which interrupts the building volume on the north side.
Its contours are now no longer clearly recognizable. Originally the sunken concrete terrace was surrounded on the front by a concrete parapet. The sides are still recognizable from stuccoed side walls that project forward from the rear wall. The side walls have a wave-like form and are terminated at the front by a thickening on which a spherical crest was originally present. The stuccoed rear wall of the theater is relatively closed and provided with a waffle pattern. In the middle the entrance to the enclosures is incorporated while high columns in concrete are erected in the corners with the side walls.
The buildings behind and on either side of the terrace are built of yellow facing brick. They are topped by a gabled roof which is partly tiled with red and partly with muted roof tiles. On the garden side the facades are blind. The stepped, elongated facade on the side of the service area shows at the height of the bear terrace the original elevation with a number of original circular windows. The remaining facades have been altered. At ground floor level they show fair-faced brickwork and above them rabat sections. The end gable on the east side has a rectangular window, while the western end gable is blind. On the western end gable is a wall constructed in yellow facing brick ending with a brick gate pier with a natural stone cone on top. The wall is topped with red hollow roof tiles.
Valuation
The BEAR THEATER WITH ADJACENT SERVICE BUILDINGS is of general importance:
- the object has architectural-historical value because of the material used, the applied proportions, the design and the careful detailing;
- as a characteristic example of multidisciplinary artistic applications;
- the object has urban planning and ensemble value because of its functional positioning on the central axis and because of its coherence with other complex components;
