Inleiding
Voormalig speelgebouw - onderdeel van het complex Diergaarde Blijdorp - naar het ontwerp van ir. S. van Ravesteyn tot stand gekomen in 1939-1941. Het gebouw is gesitueerd tegen de oostelijke grens van het diergaardeterrein, ten noorden van de oude hoofdingang. Oorspronkelijk fungeerde het hier als kinderspeelgebouwtje bij een speeltuin naast de hoofdingang. Het terrein van de speeltuin is ingericht als dierenverblijf. Het speelgebouw is wat gevelinvulling betreft op onderdelen gewijzigd.
Omschrijving
Het (voormalige) SPEELGEBOUW (10) is gebouwd op een rechthoekige, iets gebogen grondslag. Het volume is éénlaags en wordt bekroond door een met rode pannen gedekt zadeldak. De constructie bestaat uit een betonnen skelet. De wanden zijn ingevuld met gele verblendsteen tussen de uitstekende betonnen kolommen. De gevels bezitten verschillende soorten openingen met houten kozijnen. De lange gevels zijn daarbij voorzien van een strook bovenlichten onder de dakrand. De (gewijzigde) ingangspartij in de kopse noordgevel is aan weerszijden voorzien van kenmerkende naar binnen toe gebogen wanden en wordt verder gemarkeerd door een uitstekende betonnen latei.
Waardering
Het (voormalige) SPEELGEBOUW is van algemeen belang:
- het object heeft architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege het materiaalgebruik, de toegepaste verhoudingen, de vormgeving en de verzorgde detaillering;
- het object heeft stedenbouwkundige en ensemblewaarde vanwege de historisch-functionele situering aan de oostzijde van het diergaardeterrein en de samenhang met andere complexonderdelen.

Introduction
Former play building - component of the Diergaarde Blijdorp complex - built to the design of ir. S. van Ravesteyn in 1939-1941. The building is situated against the eastern boundary of the zoo grounds, north of the old main entrance. Originally it functioned here as a children's play building at a playground next to the main entrance. The playground site has been laid out as an animal enclosure. The play building has been altered in parts as regards facade infill.
Description
The (former) PLAY BUILDING (10) is built on a rectangular, slightly curved ground plan. The volume is single-storey and is crowned by a gabled roof covered in red tiles. The construction consists of a concrete skeleton. The walls are infilled with yellow facing brick between the projecting concrete columns. The facades have various types of openings with wooden windows. The long facades are thereby provided with a strip of fanlights below the roof edge. The (altered) entrance section in the gable north facade is provided on either side with characteristic inward-bending walls and is further marked by a projecting concrete lintel.
Valuation
The (former) PLAY BUILDING is of general importance:
- the object has architectural-historical value because of the material use, the applied proportions, the design and the careful detailing;
- the object has urban planning and ensemble value because of the historically-functional situating on the east side of the zoo grounds and the coherence with other complex components.
