Inleiding
Het toegangshek - onderdeel van diergaarde Blijdorp - kwam naar het ontwerp van ir. S. van Ravesteyn tot stand in 1939-1941. Het object is gesitueerd aan de Van Aerssenlaan, aan de oostgrens van het terrein. Het hek is vormgegeven in functionalistische stijl gecombineerd met neobarokke elementen.
Omschrijving
TOEGANGSHEK (8). De (voormalige) entree bestaat uit twee naast elkaar gelegen half cirkelvormige delen, waarvan de noordelijke de hoofdingang vormt en de zuidelijke de bezoekersingang met kaartverkoophokjes. Het ensemble vormt de stedenbouwkundige beëindiging van de Bentincklaan. De hoofdingang, bestemd voor grote transporten en massabijeenkomsten, bestaat uit negen in halve cirkel geplaatste hoge dubbele betonnen, met marmer-stucco beklede kolommen waartussen sierlijk vormgegeven smeedijzeren hekken zijn geplaatst. De buitenste kolommen worden bekroond met vlaggenmasten. Op de overige kolommen staan geabstraheerde dierensculpturen van de beeldhouwer L. Bolle. De hekken bezitten cirkels met daarin kleine dierfiguren en het monogram van de diergaarde. De bezoekersingang bestaat uit vijf in een halve cirkel geplaatste kaartverkoophokjes onder een doorlopend plat dak, waarop in schuine belettering 'Diergaarde Blijdorp' staat. In een groot ovaal uiterst rechts is het logo van de diergaarde gevat: twee giraffekoppen. De kaartverkoophokjes zijn levendig verfraaid met figuren.

ENTRANCE GATE (8). The (former) entrance consists of two adjacent semi-circular sections, of which the northern forms the main entrance and the southern the visitor entrance with ticket booths. The ensemble forms the urban planning termination of the Bentincklaan. The main entrance, intended for large transports and mass gatherings, consists of nine high double concrete columns arranged in a semicircle, clad with marble stucco, between which elegantly designed wrought iron gates are placed. The outer columns are crowned with flagpoles. On the remaining columns stand abstracted animal sculptures by sculptor L. Bolle. The gates possess circles containing small animal figures and the monogram of the animal park. The visitor entrance consists of five ticket booths arranged in a semicircle under a continuous flat roof, on which 'Diergaarde Blijdorp' is lettered in slanting script. In a large oval at the far right is the logo of the animal park positioned: two giraffe heads. The ticket booths are vividly decorated with figures.
