Inleiding

- de objecten hebben architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege het materiaalgebruik, de toegepaste verhoudingen, de vormgeving en de verzorgde detaillering;

- als karakteristiek voorbeeld van multidisciplinaire kunsttoepassingen;

- de objecten hebben stedenbouwkundige en ensemblewaarde vanwege de functionele situering op de centrale as en vanwege de samenhang met andere complexonderdelen;

Introduction

The giraffe house and tea pavilion - components of animal park Blijdorp - were constructed to the design of S. van Ravesteyn in 1939-1941. The building is situated at the northern end of the central axis. The buildings were constructed in functionalist style combined with neobrocque elements.

As a result of changed functional use, the buildings have largely lost their original layout and finishes. The windows now possess aluminium profiles in place of steel glazing bars. Originally a tiled terrace with a concrete parapet was situated between both objects.

Description

GIRAFFE HOUSE and TEA PAVILION (6) were created mirrored to each other and are comparable in layout and finish. They have a rectangular, slightly convex curved floor plan. The pavilions each have a main volume under a gabled roof with a greenhouse-like extension under a flat roof at the front and a narrow extension at the rear. A colonnade of eight columns with a symmetrically curved course connects the pavilions to each other. In the middle above the colonnade stands an abstracted concrete sculpture of giraffes, designed by sculptor L. Bolle. The terrace in front of the colonnade and between the pavilions was later renewed. The construction of the pavilions consists of a concrete skeleton. This is closed off at the front and side facades with glazed screen walls on a masonry parapet. The rear facades are entirely constructed of yellow facing brick. The main volumes are crowned by slightly inward-curving gabled roofs covered with red roof tiles. The lower extensions have a flat roof.

The western pavilion, originally the giraffe house, has the giraffe stable in the main volume. In the greenhouse-like volume, whose side facades are closed off with masonry, the public space was located. In the extension at the rear was a heating installation. In the eastern pavilion the tea pavilion is housed, with the kitchen located in the narrow extension at the rear. The pavilion is partially cellar'd. Internally both buildings were provided with the same columns and lighting.

Valuation

The GIRAFFE HOUSE and TEA PAVILION are of general importance:

- the objects have architectural-historical value because of the material use, the applied proportions, the design and the careful detailing;

- as a characteristic example of multidisciplinary artistic applications;

- the objects have urban planning and ensemble value because of the functional siting on the central axis and because of the coherence with other complex components;

- the objects have visual-spatial value as the termination of the central axis on the north side of the complex.
