Omschrijving onderdeel 2:

Description of component 2:

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. The historic park layout of De Haere is characterized by its large scale and by the interweaving of phases of Dutch garden and landscape architecture: formal phase, early landscape style phase and late landscape style phase. The historic park layout of De Haere dates back to the 18th century after in 1767 the manor house came into the possession through inheritance of Jan van Suchtelen, captain of the foot guards and mayor of Deventer, married to Josina Cecilia van Buren. Jan van Suchtelen had the house extensively renovated and had a park laid out in formal style. On the map of De Haere by H. van Hooff from 1781 the house and rectangular moated site are situated in a strongly east-west oriented grid of avenues with three avenues tapering towards the west, the central one lying on the axis of the house probably forming the entrance avenue: behind the house this central vista line continued to the Bockhorsterweg (east side) and the most southerly avenue was also, according to Van Hooff's map, extended at the rear of the house to the Bockhorsterweg. The Cadastral Draft Plan indicates that the present planting of avenue trees along the Bockhorsterweg existed at that time. Furthermore the Cadastral Draft Plan from 1822 indicates a formal avenue pattern, which originated from the most northerly avenue and which formed a walk around the hill feature situated somewhat north-west of the house. The latter avenue pattern is entirely preserved, as is the most southerly avenue, to the extent of the section behind the house to the Bockhorsterweg. The central sight axis at the rear of the house was reconstructed around 2000. Van Hooff's map from 1781 furthermore shows a pond feature on the west side of the park at the location of the current pond in landscape style. Perhaps a start had been made with this digging in 1781, but more likely it concerns the presence of a mill wheel. In the period 1781-1822 this pond was dug into the current still preserved spacious pond feature in landscape style. Also the extensive woodland layout with walking paths, of which this pond forms part and which extends to the Hengforderweg, was then entirely present, as emerges from the Cadastral Draft Plan and the accompanying Original Indicating Tables. These changes took place during the time when De Haere was in the possession of Arnold Jan Bernard van Suchtelen, mayor of Deventer and member of the Second Chamber of the States General. The Cadastral Draft Plan furthermore indicates that the formal avenue system of 3 tapering avenues on the west side of the house had largely disappeared by 1822. The southernmost of these three avenues had degenerated into a walking path. The sight line at the rear of the house probably then formed the entrance drive. Perhaps still in the period of Arnold Jan Bernard van Suchtelen, who sold the estate in 1840 to Julie Adrienne Mittendorf, or in the period of the latter owner, the northernmost of the three tapering avenues west of the house was taken into use as an entrance avenue, albeit that the avenue did not acquire the neat profile as before. The raised ground profile, over which the avenue originally ran, was presumably preserved and this forms the basis of this renewed entrance avenue laid out in somewhat informal manner, which has been preserved to the present day. The avenue is indicated on the Topographic and Military map from 1847, on which it can also be seen that the meadow on the west side of the house by planting of tree groups already had the appearance of a park meadow in landscape style. In the last quarter of the 19th century, when the estate was in the possession of Pierre Gustave Voûte, the park layout underwent considerable alteration. Between 1882 (map) and 1901 (death of Pierre Gustave Voûte) a spacious park meadow with tree groups in landscape style was laid out in front of the house, creating from the house the current majestic vista over the meadows in a westerly and south-westerly direction. The vista ends on the dike (Rijksstraatweg). Furthermore the already existing pond feature in landscape style on the west side of the park was extended in a wide curve in the direction of the house to the moat ditch, whereby the layout of the ditch was given a landscape character. The original northerly formal avenue was extended from the house in gentle curves to the Bockhorsterstraatweg. Previously this was not possible given the presence of the farmhouse Graskamp between this avenue and the Bockhortserstraatweg. After the demolition of the farmhouse the farmyard was incorporated into the park layout of De Haere. Which landscape architect was involved in these changes to the park in the second half of the 19th century is (as yet) not known. In the 1960s of the 20th century, in connection with the IJssel line laid out under threat of the Cold War, the main entrance drive and one of the meadows north of the house were raised somewhat, as can be seen in the field.

Valuation The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT, belonging to the historic country estate De Haere is of general cultural-historical significance

- because of the historical stratification of the park with layers from the 18th century, early 19th century and from the second half of the 19th century;

- because of its integrity;

- because of its age;

- because of its beauty value.
