Omschrijving onderdeel 34: GARAGE, A3-281.

Inleiding

Description of component 34: GARAGE, A3-281.

Introduction

The former GARAGE Building A3 (281), part of the Artillery Installations, was built in 1930 as the last building in the A-cluster in connection with the increased use of (armoured or otherwise) vehicles by the then Dutch Armed Forces. This building also housed the fire engine for the Military Terrain. Behind the building there is still a fire water pit. The garage is freely situated on the east side of the military terrain behind a row of former service dwellings at Zijkanaal G. In front of the garage is paving of bricks in a herringbone pattern. The building is a component of the cluster of uniform A-buildings, but built later. In the A-cluster maintenance was carried out on weapons and vehicles.

N.B.: The lubrication pit from the 1970s located on the south side next to the building is not covered by the protection.

Description

Garage constructed in expressionistic architectural style on a ground plan composed of three rectangles. The surface area measures 83.25 x 17.25 metres. The three single-storey building masses that make up the building are internally connected to each other. The middle building mass is the largest and highest and projects slightly compared to the two lower side wings. It has a flat roof and the two lower side wings have a gently sloping gabled roof with large overhang. The roofs and the overhang are executed in BIM concrete slabs covered with bitumen. In the roof of the middle section two skylights have been placed transverse to the facade and in the right wing there is one transversely placed roof light that follows the shape of the gabled roof. The entire building is constructed of grey brick in half-brick bond with recessed joints.

The front facade (southeast) is articulated by horizontal and vertical bands and accents in brick and concrete. The front facade has an approximately symmetrical layout with in the high central section three pairs of large wooden hinged doors with per door a wooden L-shaped glass panel with glazing bars and above each door a large rectangular steel window with small 30-pane glazing bars. To the right of the centre is - slightly recessed - the porter's lodge with a 36-pane window above and a 12-pane window below as well as on the right a recessed access door. Both wings each contain five pairs of hinged wooden doors with windows. In the intermediate wall sections windows are placed above connecting to them.

Both side facades are provided with three steel 3- and two 6-pane windows.

The rear facade is provided with 6 steel strip windows with each 5 panes just below the overhang and a steel door against the south corner. In the middle there is still a tank and somewhat further north an extension with chimney of later date. Furthermore several original support brackets for the pipe system are still present on the rear facade.

The internal steel structure in the raised central section consists of portal frame beams and the structure in both side wings consists of English roof trusses (ascending diagonals). Above this a concrete coffered ceiling has been provided with some roof lights in gabled roof form in the roof. In the interior the original layout and steel structure are still intact.

Valuation

The former GARAGE A3 is of cultural, military and architectural historical value as an example of a garage for maintenance of military vehicles from the Interwar period in expressionistic architectural style with fine brickwork and rich detailing for a garage. The former garage is of historical-functional importance as a component of the Amsterdam Defence Line, more particularly the A-cluster on the Hembrug terrain.
