Omschrijving onderdeel 27: PRODUKTIE- EN BEPROEVINGSGEBOUW, B5-272A.
Inleiding
Dit voormalig PRODUKTIE- EN BEPROEVINGSGEBOUW oftewel Gebouw B5 (272A), onderdeel van de Artillerie-Inrichtingen, is rond 1930 gebouwd als werkplaats voor de productie en beproeving van loodazide, een belangrijk detonatiemiddel dat in het Interbellum slagkwik als detonatiemiddel verving. Deze ontwikkeling had de Artillerie-Inrichtingen tot deze nieuwbouw gedwongen. Gebouw B5 maakt onderdeel uit van het B-cluster (de B staat voor Beproeving) dat voor het merendeel uit testgebouwen voor munitie bestaat en vrijwel centraal op het Hembrugterrein ligt. Gezien het immer aanwezige ontploffingsgevaar is het gebouw vrij gelegen. Bij het B-cluster zijn aarden wallen en het zgn. Reigersbos oftewel schokbos aangelegd om bij ontploffing losvliegend materiaal op te vangen. De waterlopen moesten voorkomen dat brand oversloeg en konden bluswater leveren.
Omschrijving
Gebouw B5 telt twee bouwlagen op een vierkante plattegrond onder een plat dak afgedekt met bitumen. Het gebouw is deels opgetrokken in baksteen en deels (west- en zuidzijde) in beton. De muren zijn opgemetseld in staand verband met als bijzonderheid klezoortjes bij sommige ramen (zie noordzijde). Aan de noordzijde bevindt zich een (recente) stalen trap naar de tweede bouwlaag. De gevels zijn regelmatig ingedeeld met smalle, verticale meerruits vensterstroken. De houten deuren zijn voorzien van 12 onregelmatige ruitjes. Ter plaatse van de tweede bouwlaag is de betonnen muur tot op de hoogte van het dak opgetrokken. De 50cm dikke betonnen muren met steunberen aan de achterzijde omvatten een open testruimte en waren bestemd om de uitwerking van een ontploffing te beperken. Uit de plank- en nerfstructuur in het beton volgt dat het bouwwerk ter plaatse is gegoten. De ruimte is toegankelijk aan de zuidzijde via een rechthoekige opening en aan de westzijde via een rondboogopening in het beton. Naast de opening aan de zuidzijde is een metalen klimladder geplaatst.
Het interieur bestaat uit een opslagruimte, een kantoorruimte en werkplaatsen. Opvallend element is het stalen schuifluikje voor waarneming.
Waardering
Het voormalig PRODUKTIE- EN BEPROEVINGSGEBOUW B5 is van cultuurhistorische en - meer in het bijzonder - militair-historische waarde als uniek en gaaf bewaard gebleven productie- en beproevingsgebouw voor munitie met loodazide uit het Interbellum. Het gebouw is tevens van groot belang als historisch-functioneel onderdeel van het Hembrugterrein en de Stelling van Amsterdam in het algemeen alsmede van het B(eproevings)-cluster in het bijzonder. Het is voorts van typologische waarde als beproevingsgebouw met een aparte buitenruimte omgeven met betonnen wanden.

Introduction
This former PRODUCTION AND TESTING BUILDING, namely Building B5 (272A), part of the Artillery Installations, was built around 1930 as a workshop for the production and testing of lead azide, an important detonating agent that replaced mercury fulminate as a detonator during the Interwar period. This development forced the Artillery Installations to undertake this new construction. Building B5 forms part of the B-cluster (the B stands for Testing) which consists largely of test buildings for ammunition and lies almost centrally on the Hembrug site. Given the ever-present explosion hazard, the building is isolated. At the B-cluster, earthen embankments and the so-called Reigersbos or shock forest were constructed to catch flying debris in the event of an explosion. The watercourses were designed to prevent fire from spreading and could provide firefighting water.
Description
Building B5 has two storeys on a square floor plan beneath a flat roof covered with bitumen. The building is partly constructed in brick and partly (west and south sides) in concrete. The walls are laid in stretcher bond, with the particularity of small decorative stones at some windows (see north side). On the north side there is a (recent) steel staircase to the second storey. The facades are regularly divided with narrow, vertical multi-pane window strips. The wooden doors are fitted with 12 irregular panes. At the level of the second storey, the concrete wall is built up to the height of the roof. The 50cm thick concrete walls with buttresses on the rear side encompass an open test space and were intended to limit the effects of an explosion. From the plank and grain structure in the concrete it follows that the building was cast in situ. The space is accessible on the south side via a rectangular opening and on the west side via a round-arched opening in the concrete. Next to the opening on the south side, a metal climbing ladder has been placed.
The interior consists of a storage space, an office space and workshops. A striking element is the steel observation hatch.
Valuation
The former PRODUCTION AND TESTING BUILDING B5 is of cultural-historical and—more particularly—military-historical value as a uniquely and well-preserved production and testing building for ammunition with lead azide from the Interwar period. The building is also of great importance as a historical-functional component of the Hembrug site and the Amsterdam Defence Line in general, and of the B(Testing)-cluster in particular. It is furthermore of typological value as a testing building with a separate exterior space surrounded by concrete walls.
