Inleiding
Het voormalig SASGEBOUW oftewel Gebouw B1 (103), onderdeel van de Artillerie Inrichtingen, is rond 1916 gebouwd als werkplaats voor de productie van sas en het prepareren van munitie en is daarmee een van de oudste gebouwen van het B-cluster. Het B-cluster (de B staat voor Beproeving) bestaat voor het merendeel uit testgebouwen voor munitie en ligt vrijwel centraal op het Hembrugterrein. In Gebouw B1 werd het licht ontvlambare sas, een detonatiemiddel voor granaten en patronen, geproduceerd en munitie geprepareerd. Gezien het immer aanwezige ontploffingsgevaar zijn bij het B-cluster aarden wallen en het zgn. Reigersbos oftewel schokbos aangelegd. De bomen en struiken daar moesten losvliegend materiaal opvangen en de waterlopen moesten voorkomen dat brand oversloeg en konden bluswater leveren.
Omschrijving
Het sasgebouw heeft één bouwlaag op een rechthoekige plattegrond met een oppervlakte van 19.40 x 11.80 meter onder een flauw hellend zadeldak dat is afgedekt met bitumen. In een gedeelte hiervan zijn lichtdoorlatende kunststofplaten aangebracht. Het gebouw is opgetrokken in rode en grauwe baksteen in een houten vakwerkconstructie. De halfsteensmuren zijn opgemetseld in staand verband. Aan drie zijden van het gebouw bevindt zich een portaal met een (nood)uitgang in verband met het ontploffingsgevaar. In de geveltop boven de ingang is een betimmering van houten witgeschilderde gepunte rabatdelen aangebracht. Het gebouw heeft een regelmatige vensterindeling met groenwit geschilderde houten 9-ruits vensters en daarboven 3-ruits valramen.
Het interieur bestaat uit werkplaatsen en een kleine kantoorruimte. De kapconstructie is van hout en wordt gedragen door in de wanden opgenomen houten staanders met schoorelementen.
Waardering
Het SASGEBOUW B1 is van cultuurhistorische en - meer in het bijzonder - militair-historische waarde als werkplaats voor de productie van een van de belangrijkste detonatiemiddelen van de 20ste eeuw. Het is bovendien een van de oudste sasgebouwen nu reeds tijdens de neutraliteitsperiode van Nederland in de Eerste Wereldoorlog met de productie is gestart. Het is tevens van groot belang als historisch-functioneel onderdeel van het Hembrugterrein en de Stelling van Amsterdam in het algemeen alsmede van het B(eproevings)-cluster in het bijzonder. Het is voorts een voorbeeld van traditionalistische bouw op het fabrieksterrein.

Introduction
The former SAS BUILDING or Building B1 (103), part of the Artillery Installations, was built around 1916 as a workshop for the production of sas and the preparation of munitions and is thus one of the oldest buildings of the B-cluster. The B-cluster (the B stands for Testing) consists for the most part of testing buildings for munitions and lies almost centrally on the Hembrug site. In Building B1, the highly flammable sas, a detonating agent for grenades and cartridges, was produced and munitions were prepared. Given the ever-present risk of explosion, earth ramparts and the so-called Reigersbos or shock wood were constructed at the B-cluster. The trees and shrubs there were to catch flying debris and the watercourses were to prevent fire spread and could provide fire-fighting water.
Description
The sas building has one storey on a rectangular floor plan with an area of 19.40 x 11.80 meters under a gently sloping gabled roof that is covered with bitumen. In a section of it translucent plastic sheets have been installed. The building is constructed in red and grey brick in a wooden half-timber construction. The half-brick walls are laid in stretcher bond. On three sides of the building there is a porch with an (emergency) exit in connection with the explosion hazard. In the gable above the entrance a timber facing of green-painted wooden pointed louver sections has been installed. The building has a regular window arrangement with green-white painted wooden 9-pane windows and above them 3-pane pivot windows.
The interior consists of workshops and a small office space. The roof truss structure is of wood and is supported by wooden posts integrated in the walls with bracing elements.
Valuation
The SAS BUILDING B1 is of cultural historical and - more particularly - military historical value as a workshop for the production of one of the most important detonating agents of the 20th century. It is moreover one of the oldest sas buildings as production began during the Netherlands' neutrality period in the First World War. It is also of great importance as a historical-functional component of the Hembrug site and the Amsterdam Defence Line in general and of the B(Testing)-cluster in particular. It is furthermore an example of traditionalist construction on the factory site.
