Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 30: SCHUDPROEVENGEBOUW, B8-272D.
Inleiding

Description
Description component 30: SHAKE-TEST BUILDING, B8-272D.
Introduction
Former SHAKE-TEST BUILDING B8 (272D), part of the Artillery Facilities, dating from 1930, was intended for testing ammunition and explosives by means of shake tests. Building B8 forms part of the B-cluster (the B stands for Testing) which largely consists of test buildings for ammunition and closely resembles B7. When testing ammunition there was always a risk of explosion. To prevent the spread of explosions and/or fire, earthen embankments and the so-called Reigersbos or shock wood were constructed at the B-cluster. The trees and shrubs there were intended to catch flying debris and the watercourses were meant to prevent fire from spreading.
Description
The testing space has a square floor plan under a wooden roof with overhang. The facades are constructed in concrete. Wooden 8-pane windows are fitted in the facades. The space consists of an open area, which is enclosed by a 40 cm thick concrete wall supported by buttresses. This was intended to limit the effects of any explosions. From the plank and grain structure in the concrete it follows that the building was cast in situ.
In the open area there was space for the installation of a shake machine, unlike shake-test building B7 where the shake machine was installed inside.
Valuation
The former SHAKE-TEST BUILDING B8 is of cultural-historical and - more specifically - military-historical value as a unique and well-preserved shake-test building for ammunition and explosives. The building is also of great importance as a historical-functional component of the Hembrug site and the Amsterdam Defence Line in general as well as the B(Testing)-cluster in particular. It is furthermore of typological value as a test building with a separate outdoor space surrounded by concrete walls.
