The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 18: SCHUILBUNKER, Gebouw 382.

Inleiding

Description of component 18: AIR RAID SHELTER, Building 382.

Introduction

This former civil AIR RAID SHELTER for the personnel of the Artillery-Institutions from 1939 stands close to Zijkanaal G on the southeastern side of the Hembrug site. The bunker is bomb- and gas-proof, but no provisions have been built in against radio-active fall-out. The space is therefore only suitable for brief occupation. After the Second World War this bunker was used, among other things, for vibration testing with ammunition packaging.

Description

The building, with its ridge oriented southwest-northeast, lies partly below ground level.

Aboveground, the building consists of two identical small square concrete structures, located at the southwest and northeast facades of the shelter, with a gently sloping roof surface designed to cause grenades and bombs to ricochet, and a large overhang at the entrance. In the roof is an opening for the radio installation. On the walls, the plank and wood grain structure of the timber in which the concrete was once poured is still visible.

In the aboveground structures is a staircase down to the underground shelter which can be reached via a steel hatch.

The shelter itself is a space of reinforced concrete on a rectangular ground plan without windows with an area of 19.50 by 5.50/6.50 metres. The wall thickness is 1.50/1.95 metres and the roof thickness approximately 3 metres. In the interior too, the grain marks of the wooden planks of the concrete formwork are still visible on the walls and ceiling (brutalism). Only long benches with wooden components are arranged along the two longitudinal walls. At the end side is the steel access hatch. There is a changing room, a waiting room and a room for the leader. The latter room points to the use of the bunker as a command post.

Valuation

The former AIR RAID SHELTER is of cultural, military and architectural-historical (typological) value as a unique and well-preserved example of a civil air raid shelter from the Interwar period and is also significant as a historically-functional component of the Hembrug complex.
