Omschrijving
GROT (HERMITAGE) (13) behorende bij de historische buitenplaats Backershagen. De grot/hermitage dateert uit het einde van de 18de eeuw en vormt een belangrijk onderdeel van het vroeg landschappelijke parkgedeelte uit omstreeks 1772. In de 19de eeuw schrijft J. Craandijk '... een ingezonken pad tusschen steile, met kloeke stammen bekroonde moskanten, leidt naar een grot aan den vijver, een lieflijk rustig plekje (...)'. De grot ligt op een schiereilandje met mosheuvel ten noordwesten van de koepel en verkeert thans in ruïneuze staat. Oorspronkelijk was de grot bekleed met sintels en slakken om een rotswand te suggereren. Mogelijk was de grot ook gedecoreerd met schelpen. Gemetselde deels overwelfde grot van rode baksteen in kruisverband, rollagen afdekking, deels hergebruikte kloostermoppen. Gebouwd op een gebogen grondvlak met een overkluisde doorgang leidend naar een halfcirkelvormig gedeelte met daarin aan weerszijden een siernis. Terzijde van de grot een vertrek met stookplaats met rookkanaal.

De GROT (HERMITAGE) is van algemeen cultuur-, architectuur- en tuinhistorisch belang:
- vanwege de ouderdom;
- vanwege de zeldzaamheidswaarde;

Description
GROTTO (HERMITAGE) (13) belonging to the historical country estate Backershagen. The grotto/hermitage dates from the end of the 18th century and forms an important component of the early landscape-style park section from around 1772. In the 19th century J. Craandijk writes '... a sunken path between steep moss-covered slopes crowned with strong trunks, leads to a grotto at the pond, a lovely quiet spot (...)'. The grotto lies on a small peninsula with a moss mound to the north-west of the cupola and is currently in a ruinous state. Originally the grotto was clad with slag and clinker to suggest a rock wall. The grotto may also have been decorated with shells. Mortared partly vaulted grotto of red brick in cross bond, roll course capping, partly reused cloister tiles. Built on a curved ground plan with a vaulted passage leading to a semicircular section with a decorative niche on each side. Alongside the grotto a room with a heating place with chimney.
