onderdeel 1

Wentzel) in neoclassicistische trant is verbouwd.

- als hoofdonderdeel van de historische buitenplaats De Paauw;

- als gaaf en representatief voorbeeld van het Neoclassicisme en de Empire uit het midden van de 19de eeuw met bouwkundige onderdelen die exemplarisch zijn voor het oeuvre van de architecten J.D. Zocher jr. en met name voor H.H.A. Wentzel;

- de hoge mate van gaafheid in hoofdvorm, materiaalgebruik en detaillering van zowel ex- als interieur;

- de bijzondere functionele, stilistische en ruimtelijke samenhang met de overige complexonderdelen van de buitenplaats;

- vanwege de situering als hart van een uitgestrekte parkaanleg gecreëerd door landschapsarchitecten Zocher jr. en Petzold;

- de beeldbepalende situering langs de Rijksstraatweg in Wassenaar en de duidelijk herkenbare samenhang met het tegenovergelegen landgoed De Horsten;

component 1

MAIN BUILDING, belonging to the historic country estate De Paauw, which originally dates from around the seventeenth century, but was remodelled in neoclassical style in 1840 (J.D. Zocher jr.) and around 1853 (H.H.A. Wentzel). The remodelling was completed in 1858 (foundation stone on front facade). The main building consists of a symmetrical main volume with corner pavilions and on the northeast side a (later added) wing with colonnade. The building has two storeys above a basement and a mezzanine. The very gently sloping roofs are largely hidden from view by the attics. The plastered facades are whitewashed and fitted with a high plinth painted grey. In the slightly recessed window recesses predominantly six-pane windows, partly executed as sash windows (oldest part) and partly as casement windows with two-pane fanlights. The windows in the middle section are hung with grey-painted blinds. The blinds on the ground floor still have movable horizontal slats. The front facade (southeast) of the symmetrical main volume has a central section of seven bays with a high attic between two lower corner pavilions with semicircular bay windows and four-pane storey windows. In front of the middle three bays is a raised platform with stairs on either side under an awning on slender cast-iron columns. The double glazed door with fanlight between pilasters in the middle window recess forms the main entrance. The storey level is closed off by a profiled string course at the same height as the cornices along the roof edges of the corner pavilions. The mezzanine contains seven small two-pane windows. In the attic zone five round sculptural pieces with zinc statues of peacocks en face and in profile on natural stone corbels. Above the cornice is an attic and above the three middle window recesses a balustrade. In the semicircular bay windows of the corner pavilions are large curved six-pane windows with curved interior shutters between grey-painted pilasters. The bay window roofs are closed off by a zinc decorative moulding with palmettes and acroteria. The northeast wing consists on the front of a set-back section with a raised platform and colonnade for the bel-etage and a building section of three bays. The colonnade consists of four fluted columns of the Ionic order on natural stone bases under an entablature. Above the colonnade the attic is emphasised by four zinc classical female statues. Under the colonnade a large double glazed door between two large four-pane windows. Against the rear facade (northwest) of the main volume, which has a similar layout to the front facade, a large central semicircular bay section over two storeys. The bay is crowned by a zinc decorative moulding with palmettes and acroteria as the bay windows on the front facade. In the bay large opening windows with fanlight, on the storey with cast-iron French balcony. Between the windows grey-painted pilasters. Above the bay section the facade steps back slightly and is covered by a gently sloping lean-to roof with suppressed Dutch tiles. On either side of the tile roof attic zones fitted with plastered work executed as half-timbering. The rear facades of the corner pavilions each contain two window recesses. The rear facade of the added wing has on the ground floor five double glazed doors with fanlights of the rear ballroom, otherwise the facade is blind. In the northeast facade a service entrance with panelled door in a surround with pilasters and pediment. The southwest facade has six window recesses with windows and a double panelled door. NB. Around 1953 a music room with archive above it was added in matching style (in place of an originally long colonnade with guest wing of Princess Marie).

Interior From the interior designed by the architect Wentzel, the staircases and various rooms in Empire style with chimneypieces in different colours and finishes have been preserved. In the southern wing parts from the Zocher period have also been preserved, such as some stucco ceilings. Basement: Largely spanned by barrel vaults with wooden beams. Tiled floor (reminiscent of the 17th-century core). Basement windows in natural stone frames on the front (18th century, possibly 17th century). Original layout. In the central hall by the stairs glazed doors with glazing bars and decorative carved work. In the kitchen the original chimneypiece, two built-in water stoves, cooking kettles and a natural stone sink. Furthermore service rooms with original toilets. Tilework. The wooden oak spiral staircase to the bel-etage has a simple balustrade of cast-iron balusters. Bel-etage: In the mirror room a marble floor with inlaid border with star motif that recurs in the ceiling, above the double mirror and panelled doors plastered medallions with allegorical figures in relief. Simple stucco ceiling with moulded work. In the present wedding room (dining room) stucco ceiling and marble chimneypiece with mirror; overdoor pieces. The chimneypiece shows similar decorative finish as the chimneypiece in the Frederik Room. The present council room (ballroom) has a very richly decorated high mirror vault and a surrounding plastered relief frieze with putti. Above the doors friezes with stucco reliefs and a decorative moulding as on the exterior above the bay windows. Rectangular panels with wallpaper in simple plastered moulded profiles. In the ceiling a star motif as in the mirror room. In the garden room at the rear of the building on the ground floor free-standing zinc columns and against the side walls two marble-clad fireplace sections and mirrors. Similar fireplace sections in the bay on the storey. Walls finished with imitation marblework in stucco lustro, partly restored in 2004 in niches in the hall. Pieter Twentz Room with marble chimneypiece, parquet floor and wooden ceiling with a painting, in which centrally a mythological representation (from Nieuw Rijksdorp) (mid nineteenth century). Frederik Room; stuccowork ceiling and overdoor pieces in relief with mythological representations (mid nineteenth century). Main staircase with zinc balustrade, in which palmette motifs are incorporated; light dome with glazing bars, roof lantern and stucco ceiling with egg moulding. The stair treads are wooden in an oak imitation; carved string parts. In the southwest corner pavilion is located the mayor's room with simple stucco ceiling and marble chimneypiece. Here is also the service stair in the same style as the main staircase; in the corridor a light dome. On the storey and attic the rooms are largely modernised, with the exception of some stucco ceilings (including from the Zocher period); the layout is largely maintained. Mezzanine with the original roof truss structure (mid nineteenth century) and spatial structure.

Valuation

The MAIN BUILDING De Paauw is of general importance in cultural, architectural and town-planning terms:

- as the main component of the historic country estate De Paauw;

- as a sound and representative example of Neoclassicism and the Empire style from the mid 19th century with structural elements that are exemplary for the oeuvre of architects J.D. Zocher jr. and particularly for H.H.A. Wentzel;

- the high degree of integrity in principal form, use of materials and detailing of both exterior and interior;

- the particular functional, stylistic and spatial coherence with the other complex components of the country estate;

- due to its positioning as the heart of an extensive park layout created by landscape architects Zocher jr. and Petzold;

- the visually defining position along the Rijksstraatweg in Wassenaar and the clearly recognizable coherence with the opposite country estate De Horsten;

- as part of the country estate strip of Wassenaar on either side of the Rijksstraatweg.
