Inleiding

Introduction

Building 22(3) c.a. stands detached on the south side of the east-west running southern part of the taxiway, broadly between Hangar III A and building 16, which lies on the north side. Building 22 comprises two clearly distinguishable components: the building proper and the sound barrier built immediately against it. The roof ridge of building 22 is oriented north-south and stands perpendicular to the taxiway, which at this location roughly coincides with the northern boundary of the 19th-century clearings here. Building 22 c.a. is a military building with technical function created around - and possibly after 1945, possibly under the Allies, which at macro level is part of a large military airfield structure from the period 1940-1945. The building is at meso level a relatively isolated component of a complex of buildings arranged in rectangular-geometric structure and forms at micro level part of a cluster of buildings positioned close against the airfield. Building 22 formerly had a function in the context of the testing of aircraft engines.

Description

Relatively small, constructed in solid brick wall thickness, entirely whitewashed except for a brown plinth, MILITARY BUILDING WITH TECHNICAL FUNCTION (engine overhaul) and adjoining SOUND BARRIER (3), on a primarily rectangular floor plan (as far as the building is concerned) and covered by a concrete, bitumen-clad segment vault-shaped barrel roof with overhang in the form of gutters. The sound barrier is executed as a broadly semicircular shape. The north facade / main facade contains centrally a recessed access opening beneath cock's comb ornament, with double outward-opening diagonally boarded green painted doors with curved hinges at the top. In the left and right side facades five window openings, with partly fixed six-pane windows and partly windows with a drop window at the top and below a division into three. The south-facing rear facade is broadly semicircularly curved and contains centrally a niche with at the base of this a heavy concrete block with profiled iron bracket. Left and right of the niche a small wooden door and in the niche a window opening with a view into the interior. The interior consists of an undivided, now empty space with a presumably soft-board ceiling and a concrete floor. Blue-grey painted wainscoting.

The semicircular, approximately three metre high brick SOUND BARRIER is provided on left and right with sloping wings and executed with a facade closure by means of a brick saddle back (coping). The central section is provided with a diamond-shaped pattern of openings by the omission of bricks. The barrier is on the rear side over its full length provided with brick buttresses.

Valuation

Single-storey MILITARY BUILDING and adjoining SOUND BARRIER, with technical function, of general importance as rare and recognisable, presumably dating from shortly after the Second World War components of an army camp set up during the war by the Germans as part of a large military airfield, because of: architectural-historical, urban-planning, military and cultural-historical, technology-historical and complex and ensemble values, which can be demonstrated inter alia by the components and details characteristic of the building period, by the location as far as possible aligned with the artificially established in German times and strongly aligned with the pre-existing spatial arrangement, geometrically determined location, by the function in the development of aircraft engines, and by the coherence with and relationship to the total military airfield concept and the spatial main lines and components of the camp underlying it.
