Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 2:
- de tuinhistorische waarde door de aanwezigheid van (zeldzame) elementen, zoals een belvedère en een cascade, uit verschillende perioden;
- de ermee verbonden historie van de waterwinning in dit gebied en de zichtbare sporen hiervan;

Description
Description of component 2:
The HISTORIC PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT of the complex historic country estate Leyduin does not display one coherent design. The fact that over the centuries certainly four main houses situated in different locations have been in use has prevented or disrupted the creation of a fully developed, coherent layout. This means that scattered across Leyduin there are components dating from different periods.
In the first place, as is the case with several country estates along the dune edge, use has been made of the natural landscape. On the one hand there is the undulating dune landscape on the northwest side of the layout. This has been used for the creation of a woodland walk. In the (late?) 18th century this was begun. The most striking element of this is the patte d'oie, which originates in the west at the bend of the stream. This consists of two long straight avenues and one short winding avenue. The northern straight avenue forms part of the sight line from the belvedere, which originally continued in both easterly and westerly directions. The belvedere is situated approximately halfway along the avenue on a greatly raised hill. Later the hilly landscape was used again through the siting of the current main house.
On the other hand there is the fairly abrupt transition to open meadow landscape on the southeast side of the layout. This created important sight lines for example for the belvedere (originally with a view as far as the Haarlemmermeer) and the main house. The vegetable gardens also found their place here.
These two landscapes have been connected with each other from time immemorial by the stream flowing across the terrain. This is a natural dune stream, but probably quite soon cultivated for the utility and embellishment of the country estate. The creation of a cascade in the 18th century, of which the remains at the level of the service house/coach house are still clearly visible, indicates this. Later the use for water extraction was added here.
Little remains today of a more detailed ornamental layout at the (former) main houses. Where the main house stood, which H.S. van Lennep had built after 1855 at the cascade, there is now a large lawn along the stream and little is visible of the layout by Springer at the current main house. Most clear is the layout immediately in front of the wooden summer house with a small drive with two large old trees directly in front of the house. Before this again a lawn framed by trees with among other things a particularly large and decorative Wingnut. The view over the lawn ends at a stream enlarged into a pond. Along the summer house there also runs an avenue, originally planted with linden trees, which opened up Leyduin all the way to the Leidsche vaart.
Valuation
The HISTORIC PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT of Leyduin is of general importance on account of:
- the garden-historical value through the presence of (rare) elements, such as a belvedere and a cascade, from different periods;
- the connected history of water extraction in this area and the visible traces thereof;
- the ensemble value of the spatial-functional relationship of the components.
