Omschrijving

Description

MAIN BUILDING (1) Huis Almelo, U-shaped, surrounded by moat, building consisting of a main block with two projecting wings and a set-back entrance section under a hipped roof. The building was constructed between 1650 and 1652. It contains a vaulted basement storey, a piano nobile, one storey and an attic. The house was rebuilt in 1883. Architect Gerrit ter Riele carried out the rebuilding in 18th-century style. The most significant alteration was the bringing forward of the entrance section, creating a new facade and a substantial hall. The staircase which originally stood opposite the entrance was relocated to the northern wing. A new large reception room was also created. The extension with service rooms on the right wing dates from 1903.

The external walls of the house are built of brick, with decorative elements of sandstone. The entrance section brought forward in 1883 under a hipped roof is adorned with four original colossal sandstone Ionic pilasters with broken pediment. Within this a crowned coat of arms of Zeger van Rechteren (the patron) and Margaretha Torck. Above the entrance the crowned coat of arms Rechteren Limpurg with escutcheon Almelo with two griffins as supporters and a banderole 1883. This coat of arms replaces the wooden memorial plaque from 1662, which is kept in the house. Below and above the windows of the storey sandstone festoons. The front of the house is furnished with sandstone bands, mouldings, lion and human masks. The remaining facades are more simply executed: the windows have flat sandstone surrounds. A number of basement windows have corner blocks and lintels of sandstone. Date anchors with 1778 and 1883.

Of note from the interior are the basements with ribless cross-vaults from the original construction period. The current interior of the piano nobile and the storey owes much of its character to the 1883 rebuilding. Dating from this period are among other things the stucco ceilings and the timber framing on the doors in neo-Rococo style, the marble floor and the wrought-iron railwork in the hall and the painted ceiling piece in the library. In addition there are a number of older elements such as doors, fireplaces and painted wallpaper in the house. Dining room in the right wing front with a sandstone fireplace with profiled mouldings from around 1720. Red velours d'Utrecht wallpaper, originating from the Mauritshuis. The drawing room to the left of the reception room has a fireplace with curved wooden mantle (early 18th century) wooden panel work, mirror and painting of Esther with finely executed surround. The wainscoting was added in the 19th century in the same style. In the left wing a room with painted wallpaper from the end of the 18th century including among other things a view of Almelo. Grey marble fireplace mantel (end 18th century) with a painted family piece in ornate frame (17th-century) on the shelf. The rooms in this wing are reduced in size. A passage has been partitioned off. In the room east of this an early 18th-century fireplace with equestrian portrait set in floral garlands and decorated with coats of arms. Stairwell from 1883 with finely carved balustrade in mid-18th-century forms.
