Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 2: HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG.

Description
Description component 2: HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT.
Large-scale park layout in early and mature landscape style from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, with sections in formal style, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The layout is characterized by an extensive woodland walk with a pattern of winding paths and some straight avenues. In the area around the house the park has a more open structure. The layout on the north and northeast side of the house was shortened considerably in 1939 by the construction of Parkweg and thereby lost the spatial coherence recognizable elsewhere in the park.
The oldest parts of the park consist of a pattern of straight avenues and embankment structure, which are remnants of an extensive formal layout dating back to the end of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. This pattern is composed of the straight avenue on the axis directly along and parallel to the front facade of the house, the cross-avenue with embankment to the west of it, and the straight avenue situated at right angles to approximately the middle of the cross-axis, which leads to the western boundary of the layout. A large part of the park was redesigned in the early landscape style in the 1770s. This layout is still recognizable, among other things, in the extensive woodland walk in the western half of the park layout, which consists of a pattern of fine-meshed winding paths and winding avenues. A striking component of the layout from this period is furthermore the heavily contoured section on the north side, which consists of the winding curves of the excavated Engelmundusbeek with steep slopes, hilly areas and a small island with hermitage. Originally this section was provided with more ornamental garden objects, such as the ruin of a castle and chapel, and several rustic bridges. From historical sources it is known that the landscape architect Johann Georg Michael was involved in this layout.
The preserved Jenever house on the south side of the park against the edge of a meadow situated to the west of the deer park in landscape style also dates back to this period, as does the Chinese pavilion in the middle of the park. The pond layout in landscape style located at the latter component presumably dates in origin also to the end of the 18th century, but its course was presumably somewhat excavated after 1833 under the direction of Jan David Zocher jr. Under his direction the deer park was furthermore laid out, for which the straight avenue of access to the house was felled. In this way the house was provided on the front with a large open space, which is surrounded by a pond layout in landscape style.
A number of exotic trees in the park in the area around the house, such as the swamp cypress, fern beech, weeping beech, weeping larch, silver linden and Nordmann fir were presumably planted by Zocher.
In 1924 the country estate was purchased by the municipality of Velsen and designated as a public woodland walk.
In 1937 the park was adapted on the northwest, west and southwest sides under the direction of the landscape architect Leonard Springer and shortened somewhat in connection with the villa park Velserbeek realized there at that time. Springer provided the park with a number of new shrub areas and presumably simplified the pattern of paths in some places.
Valuation
The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT of Velserbeek is of general importance in terms of cultural heritage:
- because of the rich stratification of historic garden styles present;
- as an icon of the early landscape style in the Netherlands;
- as a well-preserved and early example from the oeuvre of the landscape architect Johann Georg Michael;
- because of the parts of the park redesigned by Jan David Zocher jr.
