Omschrijving

Kaarsnis in zuidwestwand. Houten 18de-eeuws gangwerk.

Description

WITTE WATERMOLEN or Bloemenbleekmolen, located at the edge of the Sonsbeek park on the St. Jansbeek. The complex consists of the actual corn mill with miller's residence and the large agricultural barn which has served as a visitor centre since 1983 (see component 7 for this).

The Witte Molen is believed to have been built around 1480. This building remained in fairly complete condition despite modifications in the 18th and 19th centuries with 16th- and 18th-century windows, an early 16th-century roof truss structure, partly 18th-century gangway and 18th-century extension and a carriage passage and water conduit/sluice. A large number of windows still possess the typical 16th-century arched closings. In the late 17th or 18th century the windows were modernised. In the 18th century moreover a smaller extension was placed against the north-east side gable to enlarge the residence. The two building parts both lie under a gabled roof between spout gables with wattling. Against the south-west gable (left side) of the main block adjoins a basket-arch-shaped passage under a lean-to roof. The mill wheel is situated at the rear of the main building. The brickwork of the facades is painted white.

The front facade of the main building is asymmetrically arranged. On the right an entrance with fanlight, two glazed windows with mullion halfway and lower shutters. Arched cellar light on the left. On the upper floor three windows of different sizes with shutters. Small light and ornamental wall anchor in the gable top. The left side gable (in the passage) has an 18th-century window with glazing bars, a narrow entrance and a wide entrance under basket arch to the milling room. In the rear gable of the main block three identical windows with glazing bars and shutters. On the upper floors arched windows and blind recesses. Rod anchors and sealed pigeon holes.

In the front facade of the 18th-century extension three glazed windows with (lower) shutters and rod anchors. Right side gable with entrance and windows of different sizes. Rear gable with glazed windows with shutter and round light in gable top. Rod anchors. In the interior of the main building there is a narrow cellar with barrel vault, accessible from the milling room. The milling room is covered with a simple beam layer on consoles. Candle niche in south-west wall. Wooden 18th-century gangway. This part has an early 16th-century oak roof truss structure.

On the side of the St. Jansbeek a wooden gutter through which the water is led that falls forcefully on the wheel.
