Omschrijving

Description
Description
The historical GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT (2) of Den Aalshorst consists of a number of characteristic components, namely, the 17th or 18th century system of avenues and waterways, the rectangular garden surrounded by water to the south of the house site and the landscape walking woods on the east and south-east side of the house site. The garden and park layout contains the following elements of historical importance:
- the 18th-century Aalshorsterpad that begins at the brick-built and topped with natural stone vases gatepiers on the Heinoseweg and halfway divides with a right angle in a southerly direction to the brick gatepiers, also on the Heinoseweg. The northern part of the Aalshorsterpad is planted with summer oaks from the Heinoseweg to the Voorwaterallee. The southern part with beech trees. The Hoonhorsterpad is planted with American oaks.
- The 18th-century Voor- and Achterwaterallee, which runs from east to west and is projected at right angles to the house. The Voorwaterallee and the Achterwaterallee are in open connection with the moat surrounding the house via culverts. In the early years of the 19th century the Voorwaterallee acquired a winding course. The verges along the slopes of the Voorwaterallee are planted with trees. On the south side a winding path runs. The straight Achterwaterallee was slightly shortened at the house in the 20th century. On the west side this avenue has a spoon-shaped termination. The Achterwaterallee has a planting of a single row of summer oaks. At the western end the avenue is visually closed by a square of lime trees.
- The house site with moat and the adjoining L-shaped island, both from 1644. The water course around the house site was partly made undulating in the 19th century. On the L-shaped island stands a sundial on a plinth.
- The forecourt with its geometric layout from the early 20th century, consisting of a square central lawn, bordered by box hedges, otherwise grass areas bordered with box. At the corner points the box is clipped in a round form. In the middle of the lawn a statue on a plinth and at the entrance of the forecourt two garden vases.
- The approximately rectangular garden to the south of the house probably dates from 1644. The garden is surrounded by water on all four sides. The garden is divided into three parts. The northern part is a mixed ornamental and utility garden with a large collection of old fruit varieties. In the ornamental garden paths wind around the various borders. In this part lies a pond (now oval, formerly half-mirror arch shaped). The semi-open wooden garden pavilion under a zinc tent roof by the pond was moved in the 1960s from the moat by the house site. On the east side a Thuja hedge and a Sitka hedge are planted as boundary, on the west side a high beech hedge. The middle part is separated from the rest of the garden by brick walls. This part is used as a vegetable and nursery garden. The southern part of the garden has a symmetrical layout with central path and two oval ponds on either side and is used as an orchard with espalier fruit and fruit trees.
- The ponds to the east (one) and to the west (two) of the rectangular garden. The three ponds form part of the geometric layout of 1720 and once formed part of the course of the old Marswetering. The large square pond on the west side is called Kooivijver or Kooiplas. The small one was probably once dug out as a duck decoy. Traces in the landscape point to this. From the Kooivijver a winding lane with beech trees runs in a westerly direction. At the end of the lane lies a hill planted with lime trees, the Hondenbergje. From the lime-tree pavilion there is a wide view over the meadows with hedgerow trees and a copse.
- The 'Engelsche Werk', 400 metres to the east of the house site, which was laid out between 1765 and 1785 and is situated between the Voorwaterallee, the Heinoseweg and the Marswetering. It is a park wood with winding paths that are partly accompanied by oaks, a winding watercourse, a straight watercourse accompanying a lime-tree avenue and an irregularly shaped pond area. The watercourse is the rear part of the Marswetering which around 1775 was landscaped and added to the already existing Werk. The circular path around the pond provides different vistas revealing the apparently infinite windings of the water.
- The 'Domineesbosje' to the south-east of the garden, connected to the Engelsche Werk by an avenue. A landscape park from the same period as the Engelsche Werk (1765-1785). It consists of a walking wood with a winding path pattern.
Valuation
The GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the historic country estate Den Aalshorst is of general cultural-historical and garden-historical importance:
- because of the presence of 17th and 18th-century elements in the layout such as moats, avenues, water-allées and the garden to the south of the house
- because of the presence of two landscape walking woods laid out in the 18th century, which are mutually connected by an avenue planted with American oaks
- because of the characteristic avenues, paths, moats and pond pattern
- because of the visual-spatial context in which the buildings have been deliberately positioned.
