The register's description

Inleiding:

Omschrijving:

In 1786 aangelegd VERDEDIGINGSWERK.

Introduction:

The Battery on the Schalmdijk was constructed in 1786 in the context of the improvement of the Grebbelinie and was intended for the closure and improvement of the Slaperdijk and the protection of the Juffersluis.

Description:

Defence work constructed in 1786. The battery is located at the point where the Schalmdijk and the Slaperdijk meet, north of the Utrecht-Arnhem railway line. The battery consists of a rectangular enclosed earthwork, a redoubt surrounded by a wet ditch. The battery originally had the form of a lunette, but this was later changed to a redoubt.

On the south side the battery is accessible via an earthen dam. The maximum area of the battery is 130 by 70 metres. On the front of the battery there is still a casemate of the S3 type. On the battery there is also a concrete base of a domed casemate which was blown up by the Germans in 1941. On the battery there is also a boundary stone with the inscription O1.

Valuation:

The construction is of general interest because of:

Cultural-historical values as part of the Grebbelinie, as developed over a period of 200 years in six phases. Of great importance due to its commemorative value because of the role during the military operations in 1939-1940.

Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building art, based on:

a. the system of inundation and access defence (18th, 19th and 20th centuries), b. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century)

This concerns a complex that is primarily an example of defence works from the period:

phase 2: 1785-'86, reinforcement

Ensemble value due to its location within the Grebbelinie system in general, in particular as a well-preserved battery at the line dike between the Werk aan de Roode Haan and the core of the municipality of Leusden. Also due to the functional and physical coherence of the component parts of the complex. Finally, there is a good/reasonably good relationship with the field of fire and inundation field.

The battery is rare because it is a still virtually complete surviving example of an 18th century defence work in the Grebbelinie and as such is representative (characteristic) of this type of defence work.

The work is well preserved because virtually all component parts are still present in more or less recognisable form and function.
