The register's description

Inleiding:

Omschrijving:

In 1652-1653 aangelegd aarden VERDEDIGINGSWERK.

Introduction:

The Slaperdijk was originally intended as a civil water barrier against water damage from the Gelderse Vallei. In 1786 the dike acquired a military function in the context of the Grebbelinie. The dike served as a separating wall between the 1st and 2nd inundation zones of the Grebbelinie and is located between the Amerongsche Berg and the Werk aan de Daatselaar.

Description:

Earth defence work constructed in 1652-1653. The total length is 7500 metres. In the dike there is a coupure closure at the point where the N224 crosses the Slaperdijk. West of the dike at that location are two shutter bar store-sheds. The protected section is located north of the Utrecht-Arnhem railway line between the Fort aan de Buursteeg and the Werk aan de Daatselaar.

Valuation:

The construction is of general interest because of:

Cultural-historical values as part of the Grebbelinie, as developed over a period of 200 years in six phases.

Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building art, based on:

a. the system of inundation and access defence (18th, 19th and 20th centuries), b. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century)

This concerns a complex that is primarily an example of defence works from the period:

phase 2: 1785-'86, reinforcement

Ensemble value due to its location within the Grebbelinie system in general, in particular as a well-preserved separating wall at the line dike between the Werk aan de Roode Haan and the core of the municipality of Leusden. Also due to the functional and physical coherence of the component parts of the complex. Finally, there is a good/reasonably good relationship with the field of fire and inundation field.

The complex is rare because it is a still virtually complete surviving example of an 18th century defence work in the Grebbelinie and as such is representative (characteristic) of this type of defence work.

The complex is well preserved because virtually all component parts are still present in more or less recognisable form and function.
