Omschrijving
Omschrijving complexonderdeel 13

Description
Description of complex component 13
The CEMETERY of the Mission House was laid out between 1887 and 1895 and is located in the north of the cloister garden. The design is by Father Gerard Rademan; Bishop Haffner of Mainz consecrated the cemetery on 25 July 1895. The plan of the cemetery is rectangular. The cemetery rises towards the sides and is entirely surrounded by a wall. In the layout of the cemetery, Italian influence can be recognised in the planting of cypress-like tree forms along the path and in the construction with terraces. Access to the cemetery consists of two brick pillars from which a central middle path extends. Both pillars contain an embedded commemorative stone and are crowned with a statue of a kneeling angel. The middle path leads to the cemetery chapel. The raised cemetery chapel is accessible via brick steps and across terraces. The neo-gothic cemetery chapel has one storey beneath a gabled roof with slate tiles. The brickwork of this chapel is provided with a brown render. On the front side there is a pointed arch entrance with a double wrought-iron door fitted with grille work. The pointed arch fanlight has decorative wrought-iron work. The lower part of the fanlight contains the text "SELIG SIND DIE IM HERRN STERBEN". In the side walls of the chapel a pointed arch stained-glass window and a buttress are placed. The interior of the chapel is vaulted with cross-ribbed vaults that rest on consoles in the side walls. Around 1975 a mosaic of the Risen Christ was applied to the rear wall of the chapel, based on a design by missionary sister Serviane. The founder of the Steyler Mission House Arnoldus Janssen was buried here in 1909, but later, after his beatification on 19 October 1975, his mortal remains were transferred to a tomb placed above the floor in the lower church of the Mission House St. Michaël. The wall surrounding the cemetery dates from 1887. Along the long sides of the wall are the first ten stations of the cross, while the four final stations are arranged two by two in two special chapels on either side of the middle path. The four chapels are decorated with mosaics. In the first ten stations of the cross, relief representations are placed. In the chapels ceramic sculptures are placed. The graves are bordered with a low edge of artificial stone and bear a simple iron cross with the name and dates of life of the deceased.
