Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The CANTEEN/TRAINEES' BUILDING dates from 1950 and shows influences of the Delft School style. The building was designed by G. Hamerpagt on behalf of the n.v. voor Keuring van Electrotechnische Materialen (KEMA) in Arnhem, which has been located on the site since 1938. The KEMA was a nationally and internationally operating independent testing and certification institute. The canteen/trainees' building housed a reception/restaurant hall and a staff restaurant. Both were designed in a rather luxurious manner. There were also two dormitories for accommodating trainees who attended classes in the Information Building. Hamerpagt was the company architect of the KEMA and had designed several buildings of the complex in the 1930s. The choice of materials for the canteen/trainees' building is coordinated with the other buildings, creating architectural coherence. In its formal language, however, the building distinguishes itself from the others. The building is located on a hill in the eastern part of the site. In this section, the landscaping of the former estate Den Brink has been very well preserved. The siting of the building responds to the height differences present on the site. The front side (south side) is bounded by a sloping lawn with an iron sundial on a sandstone plinth. On the rear side are lower-lying tennis courts. The different site levels are connected by small brick stairs. On both sides a woodland has been laid out. The building nowadays functions as a company building.
Description
The canteen/trainees' building stands on a T-shaped floor plan. The building is composed of three building sections: a two-storey front (southern) section under a hipped roof, a narrower central section and a narrower, lower section with a basement and a flat roof. The facades are built of reddish-brown imitation handmade brick with recessed joints. The central section and the plinth, landing platforms, built-in planting boxes, conservatory, bay windows, window and entrance frames, balustrades and cornice are executed in concrete. The windows are provided with multi-pane steel frames; the entrances with a double steel door and matching fanlight.
The front section is characterized by chamfered pilasters and an abstracted cornice of concrete and decorative brickwork. Centrally against the symmetrical front facade is a conservatory situated, above which a balcony. The conservatory is filled at the front with window panes and on the sides with an entrance. In the second storey are three balcony entrances situated; the frame is enriched here with a pediment. The balcony railing consists of ornamental ironwork between concrete pillars with spherical crowning. On either side of the conservatory is an entrance placed and above it a small window. Against both side facades is a bay window situated surrounded by an artificial stone flower box. Next to and above it are identical windows placed. In the right side facade is also a basement light situated. The rear facade is provided with small arched windows. The bitumen hipped roof with shallow pitch has chimneys.
Both side facades of the central section are entirely filled with a tall entrance wall, forming the main entrances of the building. The landing platform on the right side is provided with a steel balustrade. Below this platform is an arched basement entrance, accessible via a staircase.
The rear section is characterized by a plinth and a roof balustrade. Both side facades are provided with a bay window and windows as in the side facades of the front section. In the right side facade are windows of varying sizes at the level of the basement. The symmetrical rear facade has at the level of the basement a broad portico with a tiled floor and three entrances. At the level of the storey is a conservatory situated with an entrance on either side. Around the conservatory is a balcony with a brick parapet, concrete decorative vase and simple railings placed. In the extension of the rear facade is on the right a carbonstone facade with an arched basement entrance with a double grooved door. A staircase leads to the higher level terrain.
In the interior the original layout is largely still present. In the hall of the central section are steel entrance vestibules with etched decorative glass in the fanlights, on which KEMA buildings are depicted. The floor is finished with Solnhofen limestone tiles and the ceiling is plastered. In the front section is a travertine staircase with metal decorative balustrades. On the upper floor is a room with plastered alcove with niches, Solnhofen limestone fireplace with plastered overmantel, travertine window sills. Also in the rear section with the staff restaurant and adjacent rooms is a room with a Solnhofen limestone fireplace with plastered overmantel and travertine window sills.
