Inleiding
GEDENKTEKEN ter nagedachtenis van de arts-weldoener Samuél Sarphati, gesitueerd in het westelijk deel van het Sarphatipark en bestaande uit een eclectisch-renaissancistisch bouwwerk met waterbassin naar ontwerp van prijsvraagwinnaar J.R. de Kruyff en een bronzen borstbeeld naar ontwerp van S.H.J. Stracké-van Bosse, uitgevoerd in 1886.
Het monument heeft een voorgeschiedenis die tot 16 augustus 1874 teruggaat, toen de joodse bankier A.C. Wertheim tijdens de feestrede ter gelegenheid van het tienjarig bestaan van het Paleis van Volksvlijt het plan tot het monument initieerde.
Omschrijving
Het Sarphatimonument is gesitueerd op een kleine kunstmatige heuvel en bevat een groot onderkelderd waterbassin met een doorsnede van circa zestien meter, met hardstenen rand en in het midden een tempelachtig bouwwerk van bijna twaalf meter hoog, voorzien van composiet zuilen van rood Zweeds graniet op een hoog ruw bewerkt natuurstenen basement, en bekroond door een koepelvormige dak op segmentvormige frontons, met bronzen reliëf en lauwerkrans en vergulde koperen stedekroon van Amsterdam op de de top. Het grondplan van het waterbassin vormt een combinatie van cirkel en vierkant. Het monument is uitgevoerd in een combinatie van Oberkirchner zandsteen en natuursteen. De zuilen zijn voorzien van bronzen voetstukken en kapitelen. De kroonlijst erboven is voorzien van vier bronzen tekstplaten: 'Sarphati - Stichter - Van 't Nieuw Amsterdam. MONUMENT in commemoration of the physician and benefactor Samuél Sarphati, situated in the western part of the Sarphatipark and consisting of an eclectic-Renaissance building with water basin designed by prize-winner J.R. de Kruyff and a bronze bust designed by S.H.J. Description
The Sarphati monument is situated on a small artificial mound and contains a large underground water basin with a diameter of approximately sixteen metres, with hardstone edge and in the centre a temple-like building almost twelve metres high, provided with composite columns of red Swedish granite on a high rough-hewn natural stone basement, and crowned by a dome-shaped roof on segmental pediments, with bronze relief and laurel wreath and gilded copper Amsterdam city crown on the top. The ground plan of the water basin forms a combination of circle and square. The monument is executed in a combination of Oberkirchner sandstone and natural stone. The columns are provided with bronze bases and capitals. The cornice above is provided with four bronze text plates: 'Sarphati - Founder - Of the New Amsterdam. The bronze shields on the dome commemorate his life's work: 'Industry - Education - Commerce.' The dome-shaped roof is worked as if it were covered with a natural roof material, resembling leaves. The basement contains four bronze lion heads above four stone water basins around the foot of the monument. Small water-spouting frogs are situated below at the corners, also executed in bronze.
