Inleiding

Rood.

Introduction

Built in 1891-1892, a SYNAGOGUE named Tesjoengas Israel, with 250 seats for men and 70 seats for women, constructed on behalf of the similarly named (Hulpe Israels) Ashkenazi association according to a design by architect E.M. Rood in an eclectic style inspired by neo-renaissance. The differentiated front facade on the left side is higher and has a ceremonial entrance section; the lower right side contains a side entrance.

Description

On a rectangular ground plan, constructed as part of a closed facade wall, a synagogue comprising two storeys of different heights with brick walls in red-brown brick in stretcher bond alternating with white-plastered or natural stone accents such as string courses and corner and end stones and corbels and facade and drip mouldings. On the left side the tall, slightly projecting front facade of the actual place of worship beneath a pan-tiled gabled roof; above the slightly arched entrance with double door an aedicula with frieze, corbels, ornamental spheres, inscription stone and pediment. On either side the entrance is flanked by a window with arched spandrel with tilework and arched stretching course. Above a tall and moulded string course are two coupled round-arch windows with dividing wall with multiple articulation and continuous glazing bars and pivot windows. The spout gable has projecting brickwork as short pilasters on the shoulder pieces with corbels and small superstructure, in the middle a central round window with Star of David, plastered dentil moulding and capping mouldings. The broad spout is finished with a head moulding with triglyphs and architrave. On the right side a slightly recessed facade section over two storeys with straight gable finishing. On the ground floor a simple entrance door under segmental arch. Above the string course on the upper storey a window under segmental arch. Four slender corbels support the moulded gutter moulding. The rear facade of the place of worship has a tall round-ended window with multiple articulation and continuous glazing bars and with leaded glass window filling on the sides.

The interior of the synagogue contains a coffered composite vault and an undivided space as in a rectangular hall church with galleries of the matroneum at three sides on the upper storey, fitted with a projecting parapet with wooden lattice work. Centrally on the wooden floor stands the bimah with wooden railings with balusters and copper candelabra from the period of construction. A flight of five steps provides access to a rectangular and built-out niche in the rear wall in which the ark (hechal) with Torah or law scrolls behind an embroidered curtain are placed. Surrounding this a richly ornamented frame with pilasters and with mouldings and aedicula with inscription stone as a reflection of the ceremonial entrance on the front facade. Above this the window with geometric leaded glass window filling, Hebrew text and Star of David. Further including among others a wooden floor with fixed benches, candelabra and chandeliers and lectern and painted wall panels and silver ornamental tower and ebonite covering of the doors, all from the period of construction. Some Stars of David in cassettes of the ceiling. Adjacent rooms with among others simple wooden wainscoting. The rear room is intended for the celebration of the feast of tabernacles and has a hinged roof light with the original gear work and pulleys.

Valuation

Synagogue dating from 1891-1892 with associated components of general importance for its cultural-historical and architectural-historical and typological value as a rare example of a chevra synagogue preserved both externally and internally intact, executed in an eclectic-renaissance style characteristic of the period of construction. Also of importance in the oeuvre of architect E.M. Rood.
