Inleiding
In 1875-1876 tot stand gekomen woonblok met 103 ARBEIDERSWONINGEN en twee WINKELS. In opdracht van de Vereeniging ten behoeve der Arbeidersklasse gebouwd, naar een ontwerp van P.J. en W. Hamer in een stijl met invloeden van neoclassicisme en eclecticisme.
Omschrijving
Op een langgerekt rechthoekig grondplan tot stand gekomen bouwblok met begane grond, drie verdiepingen en een zolderverdieping, gedekt door een samengesteld schilddak met blauwgrijze pannen en met gemetselde schoorstenen bij de noklijn. Dakkapellen met venster onder licht getoogde kroonlijst. De lange voorgevel is dertig traveeën breed en bevindt zich aan de Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat; de korte zijgevel is vier traveeën breed en bevindt zich aan de Ruysdaelkade. Symmetrische en licht risalerende gevels met muurankers en smalle gepleisterde plint met ontluchtingsroosters en opgebouwd uit donkere baksteen in kruisverband, afgewisseld met gepleisterde accenten als lisenen en sokkels met natuursteenimitatie. Ritmische geleding door de plaatsing van de vensters, gemetselde of gepleisterde lisenen, gemetselde hoeklisenen, risalieten en symmetrische verdeling van frontons. Decoratief gebruik van gele baksteen in dubbele banden en segmentbogen boven de enkele en gekoppelde vensters. Deze vensters (in oorsprong voorzien van 6-ruits onderverdeling en van het schuifraamtype) zijn eveneens licht getoogd of hebben een gemetselde hanenkam met gepleisterde uitkragende sluitsteen. De vier traveeën brede middenpartij van de lange voorgevel bestaat uit een gepleisterde sokkel met centrale toegang en fries waarboven vier lisenen met sierkapiteel met console onder de gekorniste kroonlijst. De smalle middentravee loopt als Vlaamse gevel door en wordt afgesloten door een segmentvormig fronton. Nabij de aansluiting met de verdere gevelwand aan de rechterzijde en de hoek met de Ruysdaelkade aan de linkerzijde, bevindt zich een travee met gepleisterde sokkel met toegang en met lisenen onder segmentvormig fronton. In het midden van de gevel wordt een dergelijke travee afgesloten door een onderbroken kroonlijst waarboven een aan de onderzijde open driehoekig fronton waarin venster. Tussen de met gepleisterde lisenen geaccentueerde partijen bevinden zich licht risalerende traveeën met gepleisterde kroonlijsten als gevellijst en met een uitkragend deel van de gevelbeëindiging boven vier consoles. Aan de linkerzijde van de voorgevel worden de twee traveeën afgesloten door een breed driehoekig fronton. Aan de rechterzijde bevindt zich op de verdiepingen een brede vensterpartij onder gepleisterde en licht gedrukte serliana met dubbel middenvenster met flankerende vensters. Op de begane grond een winkelpui met twee toegangen en winkelruit met middenpost en met hoge natuurstenen plint en met gepleisterd kader en fries met kroonlijst. Op de hoek met de Ruysdaelkade een winkel met dito plint en kader en geleding van de winkelruit en met toegang aan de Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat. Bij de korte zijgevel doorbreekt het venster boven de derde verdieping de kroonlijst van de gevelbeëindiging. Aan de linkerzijde een licht risalerende smalle travee met gepleisterde sokkelzone en met vier consoles onder de uitkragende kroonlijst.
Waardering
Uit 1875-1976 daterend woonblok met arbeiderswoningen en twee winkels van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde, alsook typologische waarde als vroeg voorbeeld van filantropische sociale woningbouw uitgevoerd in voor de bouwtijd kenmerkende eclectische trant, waarbij enerzijds de woningen als eenheden herkenbaar zijn en anderzijds het woonblok als een samenhangend compositorisch geheel is behandeld. A building block erected on an elongated rectangular ground plan with ground floor, three storeys and an attic storey, covered by a complex hipped roof with blue-grey tiles and with brick chimneys at the ridge line. Roof dormers with window under lightly arched cornice. The long front facade is thirty bays wide and is situated on the Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat; the short side facade is four bays wide and is situated on the Ruysdaelkade. Symmetrical and lightly projecting facades with wall anchors and narrow plastered plinth with ventilation grilles and constructed of dark brick in English bond, alternated with plastered accents such as pilasters and socles with imitation natural stone. Rhythmic articulation through the placement of windows, brick or plastered pilasters, brick corner pilasters, risalites and symmetrical distribution of pediments. Decorative use of yellow brick in double bands and segmental arches above single and coupled windows. These windows (originally fitted with 6-light division and of the sash window type) are likewise lightly arched or have a brick chevron with plastered projecting keystone. The four bays wide central section of the long front facade consists of a plastered socle with central entrance and frieze above which four pilasters with ornamental capital with console beneath the corniced cornice. At the corner with the Ruysdaelkade a shop with likewise plinth and frame and articulation of the shop window and with entrance on the Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat. At the short side facade the window above the third storey breaks through the cornice of the facade termination. On the left side a lightly projecting narrow bay with plastered socle zone and with four consoles beneath the projecting cornice.

A residential block dating from 1875-1876 with workers' dwellings and two shops of general importance by virtue of its architectural and cultural-historical value, as well as typological value as an early example of philanthropic social housing executed in an eclectic manner characteristic of the building period, whereby on one hand the dwellings are recognisable as units and on the other hand the residential block is treated as a coherent compositional whole. Also of importance by virtue of its situational and ensemble value in relation to other blocks of early association workers' housing in the urban expansion developed from 1870-1875 to the south of the Amsterdam Buitensingel.
