Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
SCHOOL BUILDING for drawing instruction built in 1890-1891 after designs by P.J.H. Cuypers. The school is situated in the south-eastern corner of the museum garden and forms an integral part of the Rijksmuseum complex. The building was intended to elevate art and drawing instruction in the Netherlands to a higher level and is an outcome of ideas about improving art and applied arts education.
Description
The SCHOOL BUILDING has a T-shaped ground plan and consists of two storeys and a basement beneath a gabled roof. Transverse to the building, in the centre, a wing in the form of a chapel has been placed as a more or less independent extension, likewise with two storeys beneath a separate roof. The building is constructed of red facing brick with decorative use of yellow facing brick and natural stone components. On the facades various tile panels with inscriptions have been applied. The gable end of the building on the Hobbemakade side is characterized by a tower extension. Beneath the building are floating (originally secret) rainwater basements serving the Amsterdam Defence Line. The interior is kept austere. Still present are, among other things, panelled doors, unpainted wooden barrel vault, and remains of the wainscoting. A striking characteristic is formed by the building's construction: mortared barrel vaults with I-profiles in the basements and heavier iron I-profiles with child beams on top for the classrooms. The I-profiles of the classrooms are hidden from view by wooden boarding and rest on worked consoles.
As a type the drawing school is comparable with the common type of school building in this period: the classrooms on one side of the long corridor and the sanitary facilities opposite. There are differences which relate to the nature of drawing instruction. The deliberate orientation of the classrooms to the north and the tall windows are examples of this. The school is stylistically and in its principles comparable with the main building, inspired by Dutch Renaissance and late Gothic.
Valuation
The school building is
- of general cultural-historical significance because it is a tangible manifestation of views on education and museology. Also of significance because of the conceptions of drawing instruction in the last decades of the 19th century.
- of general significance because of its architectural-historical value as an important component of the oeuvre of P.J.H. Cuypers.
- of general significance because of the ensemble value of museum, museum garden, villa and school building, designed by P.J.H. Cuypers as a Gesamtkunstwerk, which remains substantially intact and recognizable. The school building as part of the Rijksmuseum complex is also of general significance because of its special visual and urban planning importance; situated on the edge and in the central axis of Museumplein.
- of general significance because of the high degree of integrity and recognizability of the original function.
- of general significance because of its rarity value: it is an integral component of a Gesamtkunstwerk, an ensemble by a single designer with unity in style, detailing, age, mutual relationship and function.
