Inleiding
Aan de westzijde van de Diamantstraat ter hoogte van het Smaragdplein in 1925-1926 tot stand gekomen gemeentelijk BADHUIS naar ontwerp in Amsterdamse School-stijl van A.J. Westerman in opdracht van de gemeente Amsterdam (PW).
N.B. Het linkerdeel van het badhuis was in oorsprong bestemd voor de mannen; het rechterdeel voor de vrouwen, elk in oorsprong met 8 stortbaden en 2 kuipbaden. In de jaren '70 van de twintigste eeuw is het gemeentelijk badhuis gesloten.
Omschrijving
Op een nagenoeg cirkelvormige plattegrond, deels in baksteen en hout opgetrokken en geheel vrij gelegen badhuis met een aan de oostzijde uitgebouwde ingangspartij met twee gekoppelde portieken waarin recente toegangsdeuren. Ingangspartij toegankelijk via een gemetselde stoep. Onder een vensterpartij bevindt zich een gedenksteen met tekst "Deze steen is bij de opening v/h badhuis aangebracht door de bewoners van de woningstichting 'De Dageraad', Algemeene Woningbouwvereniging en de woningbouwvereniging 'Eigen Haard'". De badcelruimten in de lage buitenste ring zijn voorzien van paarsgewijs geplaatste kleine negenruits vensters. De gemetselde rondlopende gevel heeft nog delen van de in oorsprong over de gehele lengte van de gevel meegaande geschulpte keramische beëindiging. De iets hoger opgetrokken en naar binnen geplaatste tweede ring boven de gang is rondom voorzien van in drieën onderverdeelde vensters. De octogonale binnenring met in vieren verdeelde vensters is voorzien van een geknikt, achtzijdig tentdak met leien en vier segmentvormige dakvensters met waaiervormige roedenverdeling. Op de nok een gemetselde achtkantige lage schoorsteen, aan de bovenzijde voorzien van een muizetandband. Aan de zuidwestzijde van het badhuis bevindt zich een laadluik.
Waardering
Badhuis daterend van 1925-1926 in een voor de bouwtijd kenmerkende Amsterdamse Schooltrant van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde als derde in de reeks van ronde gemeentelijke badhuizen en als bijzonder voorbeeld van een gemeentelijke voorziening ten behoeve van de volksgezondheid. Tevens van belang wegens situationele en ensemblewaarde vanwege de stilistische, stedenbouwkundige en historisch-functionele samenhang met de omringende woningbouwblokken.

On the west side of the Diamantstraat at the level of the Smaragdplein, a municipal BATHHOUSE in Amsterdam School style was built in 1925-1926 according to a design by A.J. Westerman commissioned by the municipality of Amsterdam (PW).
N.B. The left part of the bathhouse was originally intended for men; the right part for women, each originally with 8 shower baths and 2 tub baths. In the 1970s the municipal bathhouse was closed.
Description
On an almost circular ground plan, partly constructed in brick and wood and entirely free-standing, a bathhouse with an entrance section built out on the east side featuring two coupled porticos containing recent entrance doors. The entrance section is accessible via a brick stoep. Below a window section is a commemorative stone with the text "This stone was placed at the opening of the bathhouse by the residents of the housing foundation 'De Dageraad', General Housing Association and the housing association 'Eigen Haard'". The bath cell spaces in the low outer ring are fitted with pairs of small nine-pane windows. The brick perimeter facade still has parts of the scalloped ceramic finishing that originally ran along the entire length of the facade. The slightly higher constructed and inward-placed second ring above the corridor is fitted all around with windows divided into three sections. The octagonal inner ring with four-pane windows has a kinked eight-sided pitched tent roof with slate and four segmental roof lights with fan-shaped glazing bars. On the ridge a brick eight-sided low chimney, fitted at the top with a crenellated band. On the south-west side of the bathhouse is a loading hatch.
Valuation
Bathhouse dating from 1925-1926 in an Amsterdam School manner characteristic of the building period, of general importance for its architectural and cultural-historical value as the third in the series of circular municipal bathhouses and as a remarkable example of a municipal facility for the benefit of public health. Also of importance for its situational and ensemble value due to the stylistic, urban planning and historically-functional coherence with the surrounding residential building blocks.
