Inleiding
MOLEN. Al in de 17e eeuw stond hier op de dijk een korenmolen. In de 18e eeuw was dit alreeds een achtkante molen met een lage stelling. Het is waarschijnlijk deze molen geweest die, na zwaar in verval te zijn geraakt, niet lang na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd afgebroken. Het gemis van dit markante element in het stadsbeeld werd in de jaren '80 zo sterk gevoeld dat er lokaal een initiatief ontstond tot herbouw van de molen. Daartoe werd aangekocht de onttakelde korenmolen 'De Herder' te Willeskop (Lb). Van origine was dit een Zaanse oliemolen, gebouwd te Jisp omstreeks 1695 en in 1904 aldaar afgebroken en te Willeskop als korenmolen herbouwd. Daar werd hij kort na de Tweede Wereldoorlog buiten gebruik gesteld en onttakeld. De nog redelijk gave romp van deze ca. drie eeuwen oude molen diende als basis voor de herbouwactiviteiten in Medemblik welke afgerond werden met de officiële opening door Prins Claus in 1990.
Omschrijving
De molen bestaat uit de gemetselde bakstenen achtkante voet met daarop een onderachtkant en een houten bovenachtkant met stelling en kap. De molen is vanaf de stenen voet tot de duisplanken bekleed met hout en daarboven gedekt met riet. De kap kruit op een Engels kruiwerk. Kap en gaande werken, waaronder twee koppels maalstenen, zijn bij de herbouw nieuw aangebracht. De molen is als korenmolen geheel bedrijfsvaardig en heeft door zijn ligging op de vroegere zeedijk en aan een historische (museum)spoorlijn een dominante en betekenisvolle plaats in het stadsbeeld.
Waardering
De molen is van algemeen belang:
- vanwege bouwtechnisch-historische waarden betreffende met name de ca. drie eeuwen oude rompconstructie als herkenbaar en representatief relict van Noord-Hollandse molenhoutbouw uit het eind van de 17e eeuw die in het begin van de 20e eeuw secundair gefunctioneerd heeft in Willeskop en een voorbeeld is van molenverplaatsing zoals dat in het verleden veel is voorgekomen, hier dus tweemaal zelfs;
- vanwege situationele waarden betreffende zijn ligging en de historische gaafheid van de omgeving;
- vanwege de gaafheid van de molenbiotoop;
- vanwege de zeldzaamheid van de uit de Zaanstreek afkomstige secundaire onderdelen.

Introduction
MILL. Already in the 17th century there stood a corn mill here on the dike. In the 18th century this was already an octagonal mill with a low post. It is probable that this mill, having fallen into severe disrepair, was demolished not long after the Second World War. The loss of this striking element in the townscape was felt so strongly in the 1980s that a local initiative arose for the reconstruction of the mill. To this end, the dismantled corn mill 'De Herder' at Willeskop (Lb) was acquired. Originally this was a Zaan oil mill, built at Jisp around 1695 and demolished there in 1904 and rebuilt at Willeskop as a corn mill. There it was taken out of use and dismantled shortly after the Second World War. The still reasonably intact body of this approximately three-century-old mill served as the basis for the reconstruction activities in Medemblik which were completed with the official opening by Prince Claus in 1990.
Description
The mill consists of the mortared brick octagonal base with thereupon a lower octagon and a wooden upper octagon with post and cap. The mill is clad with wood from the stone base to the dust planks and above that covered with thatch. The cap rotates on an English wind mechanism. Cap and working parts, including two pairs of millstones, were newly installed during the reconstruction. The mill is fully operational as a corn mill and, due to its location on the former seawall and on a historic (museum) railway line, has a dominant and significant place in the townscape.

The mill is of general importance:
- on account of structural-historical values concerning in particular the approximately three-century-old body structure as a recognizable and representative relic of North Holland mill woodwork from the end of the 17th century which served a secondary function in Willeskop in the early 20th century and is an example of mill relocation as was common in the past, here indeed twice even;
- on account of situational values concerning its location and the historical integrity of the surroundings;
- on account of the integrity of the mill biotope;
- on account of the rarity of the secondary components from the Zaanstreek region.
