Omschrijving

- als voorbeeld van een in hoofdvorm bewaard gebleven vroeg 19de-eeuws woonhuis met een goed bewaard oorspronkelijk uurwerk uit 1884;

- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een ontwikkeling in de (bewonings)geschiedenis van de voormalige buitenplaats;

- van situationele waarde ten opzichte van de omringende onderdelen van de buitenplaats en vanwege de ligging in een kom temidden van het aan drie zijden omringende heuvelachtige terrein;

- als uitgangspunt en middelpunt van de parkaanleg van Mariëndaal;

Description

MAIN BUILDING with ATTACHED SERVICE DWELLING (Mariëndaal). The main building of the country estate Mariëndaal is located in the western part of the estate, north of the railway line Arnhem Utrecht, where this crosses the Schelmseweg.

The main house dates in its present form from 1857. It has an almost rectangular ground plan and is built in brick. It consists of two storeys, a basement and is covered by a hipped roof on which four chimneys, tiled with Old Dutch tiles, rest. Against the end walls there is on the left a single-storey extension with a flat roof serving as a balcony. On the right the single-storey service dwelling leans against the side wall with an applied hipped roof.

The symmetrically arranged front facade contains seven window bays and is horizontally articulated by a hard stone plinth zone, an artificial stone cordonline and at the top is concluded by a corniced cornice. Corner pilasters with a substantially executed console fitted with a head under the roof line mark the corners as well as the slightly projecting central axis. This is emphasized by the entrance section with hard stone steps, the glazed double doors under a fanlight and the balcony. This is supported by double richly decorated consoles. The canopy of the balcony is provided with a sawn wooden drip moulding. A gutter board in which a clock is inserted in the middle indicates a second slightly projecting facade section comprising three window bays. In the cornice, the consoles present only here subtly point to this rhythm of the facade. The windows, with wooden sill and straight arch, are provided with shutters in the two storeys. The windows in the basement are slightly arched and are of the wooden hinged window type.

The left side wall is occupied at the level of the first storey by the modern extension. The upper storey contains four window bays with three windows of the standard type. Separated by a window on the right corner, a balcony door is present here.

The partly stuccoed rear facade is largely occupied by the extension. The windows are of the sash window 3x(1+1) type.

Against the right side wall of the main house, at the level of the ground floor, the service dwelling is nestled. In connection with this, the upper storey is rendered blind. The (whitewashed) service dwelling under a roof covered with chamfered Old Dutch tiles, in which two renewed roof dormers, has in line with the front facade of the main house two 3x(1+2)-pane sash windows. The front facade of the service dwelling runs parallel to the end wall of the main house, contains on the left three sash windows and on the right, adapted to the level difference of the street, two smaller windows with 3x(1+1) pane division.

The rear facade with the front door facing away from the road has a 3x(1+1)-pane window.

In the interior of the main house, the original clockwork (firm I.F. Weule from Bockenem) of the clock on the front facade, dating from 1884, has remained intact.

The main house with attached service dwelling, which as a result of the fighting in the Second World War that followed the airborne landings at Oosterbeek was seriously damaged, received a new purpose in 1949 as office space and laboratory. In 1977, during an extensive restoration, the entire interior was demolished, with only the outer walls remaining. At the location of the left side wall, where there was originally a conservatory, a modern, single-storey extension was realized. At the rear of the main house, connected by means of a linking section, there is new construction for the laboratory.

Nearly all windows have been filled with aluminium frames, provided with the original cross window glazing pattern. In the front facade, the covered balcony above the front door and the clock with gutter board have been reconstructed.

Valuation

The MAIN BUILDING with ATTACHED SERVICE DWELLING (Mariëndaal) as part of the historic country estate 'Mariëndaal' is of general importance:

- as an example of an early 19th-century residential building preserved in its main form with a well-preserved original clockwork from 1884;

- as a special expression of a development in the (residential) history of the former country estate;

- of situational value with respect to the surrounding parts of the country estate and because of the location in a basin surrounded on three sides by hilly terrain;

- as the starting point and centre of the park layout of Mariëndaal;

- because of the ensemble value in relation to the other parts of the historic country estate 'Mariëndaal'.
