The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 2.

- wegens de ouderdom;

- wegens de gave aanleg in landschapsstijl met serpentinevijvers en het in ruime curven verlopend padenpatroon met uitzichten;

- wegens de onderliggende ontginningsstructuur;

- wegens de aanwezigheid van monumentale solitairen (eiken, beuken, kastanjes en een Sequoia) en boomgroepen;

Description component 2. Garden and park layout (Hal by 13A, 5296 PZ Esch, indicated on the accompanying map with no. 2).

The GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the historical country estate Den Eikenhorst was created in three phases: an early 19th-century rectilinear layout, associated with the development of the domain, a landscape layout on the east side of the house from around 1870. In the first half of the 20th century, the meadows and woodland parcels on the south and northwest sides were also incorporated into the layout. From the early 19th-century development, two east-west running avenues have been preserved to the north and south of the house, as well as a north-south running avenue (the oak-planted approach drive with gatekeeper's cottage at the entrance. See component 7 for this). Also dating from this period is the virtually square vegetable garden, which is partly walled (see component 5 for this). The first landscape-style layout on the east side of the house is characterised by winding paths leading around the serpentine pond, and an alternation of open and enclosed spaces with different views, tall trees, tree groups and solitary specimens. The front facade of the house faces east with a view over an open space (lawn) in the park towards the serpentine pond. Large groups of rhododendrons are planted along the pond. On the north side the park merges into a deer meadow with a curved pond and a circular walk. In the second landscape-style layout, the edges of the meadow west of the approach drive were given an irregular outline. A kidney-shaped pond, a winding path that forms part of a circular walk and a number of solitary specimens were laid out. In a section in the northwest of the site, a winding path pattern with different vistas was also created. West of the house stands a Sequoia dendron giganteum approximately 150 years old. In the park at the edge of the pond with a view of the house is a natural stone bench with the date 1843-1923.

Valuation

The GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT, belonging to the historical country estate Den Eikenhorst is of general interest:

- due to its age;

- due to the well-preserved landscape-style layout with serpentine ponds and the path pattern flowing in broad curves with vistas;

- due to the underlying development structure;

- due to the presence of monumental solitary specimens (oaks, beeches, chestnuts and a Sequoia) and tree groups;

- due to the functional-spatial coherence with the other components of the country estate.
