The register's description

Waardering

Het HOOFDGEBOUW Den Eikenhorst horende tot de historische buitenplaats Den Eikenhorst is van algemeen belang;

- wegens de ouderdom;

- wegens het 19de-eeuwse hoofdgebouw in eclectische stijl dat omstreeks 1900 met een tuinkamer naar ontwerp van J. Dony is uitgebreid;

- wegens de kenmerkende en centrale ligging in de tuin- en parkaanleg;

- wegens de aankleding van een aantal vertrekken in neorenaissancestijl;

Description component 1, Main building (Den Eikenhorst) (Hall 13-13A, 5296 PZ Esch, indicated on the accompanying map with no. 1).

Central to the layout is a blocky HOUSE from 1827 which was raised by one storey in 1859 and to which a veranda was added to the south side around 1870. Around 1900 a single-storey extension with a garden room/library by J. Dony followed on the northeast side. Main block on rectangular ground plan of two storeys and an attic storey under a hipped roof covered with blue traditional Dutch tiles. The low extension on the east side is one storey high and has a composite hipped roof covered with blue glazed pantiles. The gables of the main block are provided with a plaster layer. The representative gables are on the east and south sides and have plasterwork in ashlar bond, a division of pilasters and a cornice with stucco decoration. The east gable of the main block is three bays wide, overlooks the park and has on the ground floor three opening double doors (fenêtres à terre) with glazing bars and shutters. On the upper storey three six-pane windows with wide central mullion. The windows have a stucco surround and a lintel with volute-shaped consoles. Stuccoed pilasters with recessed fields between the windows. Large roof dormer with moulded gutter line and pediment with clock face anno 1827. On the ridge of the roof dormer a bell under a helmet roof, crowned by a weathervane with dragon figure. The gable of the extension of around 1900 has decorative plasterwork decoration, opening doors to the garden, open belfry with a saddle roof resting on four posts between main block and extension. The south gable is likewise three bays wide. Against it a veranda from around 1870 with cast iron columns. On the upper storey in the axis an opening door (formerly providing access to a smaller balcony) with fanlight, flanked by blind windows. The smooth plastered west gable of the main block has three storeys and an irregular layout. The entrance with double panel door and two-pane fanlight is reached via a stone step. To the left a six-pane window, to the right of the entrance a window and an opening door. On the storeys a round window for light provision to the stairwell and a number of six- and four-pane windows. The extension has on this side two six-pane windows with shutters and a roof dormer. In the north gable is the servants' entrance and a kitchen window. The layout of the interior is as follows: the hall with white marble floor provides access to the stairwell, a small room (the former reception room) a transverse corridor and the living room which overlooks the park. This has wooden panelling in Neo-Renaissance style, a similar fireplace with (later inserted) figurative tiles from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, coffered ceiling (with paintings under imitation wood painting), parquet floor all from around 1900. In the garden room/library a stone fireplace with marble columns, tile floor, wooden panelling in Neo-Renaissance style and stained glass in the fanlights. In the north gable a projecting bay window. Slightly arched double cellar in the southwest corner and a cellar under the garden room. The remaining rooms (former kitchen on the west side of the house, both salons on the south side and the servants' stairwell) have been modernized within the old structure. The same applies to the bedrooms on the upper storey.
