Omschrijving

- als uitdrukking van een ontwikkeling in de geschiedenis van de tuinarchitectuur;

Description

PARK LAYOUT, as part of the historic country estate Soeslo. Park layout in Formal and Landscape style consisting of avenues, enclaves, valley streams, gardens and an orchard as well as water features, as part of the historic country estate Soeslo. The property of Soeslo has always had an agricultural function. Only at the end of the seventeenth century was work begun on a park layout. From that period onwards major interventions in the structure take place in the area. On topographical maps from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the transformation of agricultural land into a country estate with park layout and surrounding lands can be clearly read. Between approximately 1700 and 1815 a layout in the 'formal style' is created. The perimeter of Soeslo emerges clearly on a topographical map by Van Hattinga (circa 1750). There is by then already a geometric layout with an accentuated main axis that runs straight towards the spijker as the centre of the country estate. On the first systematic military maps from the period around 1780 by Van Hooff, Hottinger and Hattinga, (side) avenues and axes are distinguished. Two straight avenues lying parallel to the main axis form the hard boundary with the surrounding meadows. Both emerge, close to each other, from the Zwolle-Heino road. The avenues and paths as well as the sight lines determine to a great extent the classicist structure of the country estate. From the same period date the orchard and the utility garden which were still present in structure and have recently been carefully reconstructed. The avenue structure continued in the complex of coppice with a plot of cultivated land to the southwest of the buildings. At present mainly the planting along the outside edge has remained. In this there occurs at the extreme western point a striking elevation, which keeps open the possibility of a summer house. This section is traced back to the map of Hottinger. After 1815 a layout in Landscape style gradually comes into being. The first changes to the formal arrangement characterised by straight axes are visible on the cadastral minute plan of 1820 in the southerly situated triangular plot with crossing axes. The recognisability of the main axis in front of the house is lost in 1858 due to the slowly but surely expanding tree groups (beeches) and the thickening of undergrowth. In the current situation this main axis has entirely disappeared but remains recognisable in the form of a wet axis. In the current situation there is no clear hierarchy to be recognised in the avenue structure. The characteristics of the Landscape style impose themselves more and more, such as the laying out of a pond in front and behind the house. These are for the most part lobe-shaped and positioned in such a way that via a sight axis in a longitudinal direction towards the house is viewed. The eastern side avenue is curved at the end of the nineteenth century and then leads towards the house. This avenue has, at the level of the hamlet of Wijthmen, a branch in the form of an alder avenue, which is also to be seen on the map of Hottinger. The avenues are accompanied by oaks and beeches and are preserved intact in structure. On the east side, at the point of a bend towards the main house, along a new boundary line a double tree row has been planted which joins on the southerly situated triangular plot with coppice. This plot, in which the historical bed structure is still present virtually intact, has consisted since the nineteen-twenties of overgrown coppice with much bramble undergrowth, a drying pond and plots of cultivated land. The old homestead site in this plot is still recognisable by a monumental lime tree. The ornamental garden and orchard now count, after reconstruction, again as fully-fledged elements in the layout characterised by the formal style.

Valuation

Park layout as part of the historic country estate Soeslo, of general importance on account of the (garden) architectural and cultural-historical value:

- as an example of a landscape garden developed from a formal layout to the beginning of the nineteenth century in which both structures are still well preserved:

- as an expression of a development in the history of garden architecture;

- on account of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
