Omschrijving

- vanwege de relatieve gaafheid van de twee bouwvolumes uit overwegend de 17de en 19de eeuw en aldus waardevol als voorbeeld van een ontwikkeling in de bouw- en de bewoningsgeschiedenis van de buitenplaats;

Description

MAIN HOUSE, as part of the historical country estate Soeslo. The originally 17th-century house acquired its definitive appearance as a main house chiefly in 1815. It consists of two building volumes which were created in various phases. The rectangular building volumes, which are offset in plan relative to each other, are constructed in brick. The single-storey volume located at the rear contains the granary dating from the 17th century, which in 1815 was extended on the northwestern side with a two-storey front house. Later the granary was enlarged on the southwestern side as indicated by a construction joint. Both building volumes are covered by hipped roofs with ridges placed parallel to each other, covered with blue-glazed Old Dutch roof tiles. Only in the front house does a chimney with a wind cap occur at the ridge ends. All closed windows (sash window type) are set only in the granary on a brick sill and provided with (panel) shutters. The windows in the front house rest on sandstone sills and are terminated by a brick arch. The front facade of the front house is symmetrical in design and comprises five bays. The central bay is formed by the entrance framed with stucco featuring false joints, which is terminated by a cornice. Above the wing door with two coupled cross-shaped glazing bars in the fanlight, there is a window with 3x(2+2) sash frames on the first floor, which also occurs twice on either side of the central bay. On the ground floor the lower sash consists of a 3x3-pane subdivision. The facade is terminated by a moulded cornice. To the left and right of the entrance, scratched into a brick is the text 'Derk Royer' and '4-10-1815'. Both side facades of the front house are mirror images of each other in terms of window arrangement with two windows on the ground floor and on the first floor in the corner with the rear house, a window. In the roof slope a roof dormer aligns with this window axis. In the right side facade, in the corner with the rear house at the level of the first-floor slab, there is a blocked window and below it a small window with anti-theft bars. The granary contains in the rear facade (southeast), which faces the garden and orchard, three windows with 5x(3+4) sash frames above the two cellar lights occurring in a cement plinth. The left corner is, as evidenced by an anomalous brick and a construction joint, not original. A construction joint also occurs between the two right windows. In the roof slope four roof dormers are installed with a four-pane casement window under a segmental-arch pediment.

The right side facade projects with respect to the side facade of the front house and contains a 3x(2+2) sash frame with to its right a glazed door reached via a sandstone step with cast-iron railings and a landing under a fanlight provided with a diamond-shaped division. In the roof slope an identical roof dormer occurs as in the rear facade. The left side facade contains only a centrally placed, identical window as in the right side facade. The interior has partially retained its original layout but has been altered in parts. Most modifications have taken place in the rear house (the granary). An opening has been made from the rear house to the front house and an opening in the dividing wall has been created between two rooms. In the 19th century the rear house was enlarged. The cellar in the rear house still possesses two barrel vaults perpendicular to each other, both of which were later plastered. The spaces on the first floor have been partly altered. At the junction of the front with the rear house the balanced composition of spaces is disrupted by the placement of the staircase in the black and white marble-tiled hall and level differences of floor and ceiling of both building volumes. In the front house Art Deco stucco ceilings are still present. In the rear house the original single beam layer is still present in two rooms.

Valuation

The main house of the historical country estate Soeslo is of general architectural and cultural-historical significance:

- on account of the relative integrity of the two building volumes from predominantly the 17th and 19th centuries and thus valuable as an example of a development in the building and residential history of the country estate;

- on account of its ensemble value as a component of the country estate.
