Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 3: FABRIEKSSCHOORSTEEN bij SPINNERIJ.
Inleiding
Waardering
De FABRIEKSSCHOORSTEEN is van algemeen belang:
- het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van het industrialisatieproces in met name de Nederlandse kunstzijde-industrie, als illustratief exempel van het pionierskarakter van de bedrijfsleiding op bedrijfsmedisch terrein, en als curieus en belangwekkend voorbeeld voor de typologische ontwikkeling van fabrieksschoorstenen tijdens de tweede industriële revolutie;
- het object heeft bouw- en architectuurhistorische waarde wegens de alleen in de schoorsteenbouw tijdelijk toegepaste trapeziumvormige radiaalstenen en de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ambachtelijke metselwerk in o.a. de uitkragingen, schoorsteenkop en sierlijsten;
- het object heeft ensemblewaarden als functioneel onderdeel van de oorspronkelijke spinnerij en de hiermee verband houdende weloverwogen situering ten zuiden van het voormalige fabriekscarré uit 1919-1922. Het schoorsteensilhouet is daarnaast van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van dit industrieel ensemble aan de spoorlijn Arnhem-Utrecht;

Description
Description of component 3: FACTORY CHIMNEY at SPINNING MILL.
Introduction
FACTORY CHIMNEY (designated under number 3 on the accompanying map) located at the south side of the square, erected in 1927 in a style showing influences of Expressionism. One of two factory chimneys on the site, referred to by workers as "the fat one".
The chimney was built for the evacuation of spinning gases. Large pipes ran over the roofs and along the facades of the spinning mill and bleachery, transporting the spinning gases to the chimney. Originally there was no exhaust system in the spinning mill and the acid fumes simply went into the air. As a result, the spinners stood in the spinning gases all day long. In particular, they suffered extremely painful eyes, known as spinner's eye, causing daylong sensitivity to any light. Only with the advent of exhaust systems and the sealing of the spinning machines did these problems diminish. The exhaust pipes have almost all disappeared. In May 1940 the chimney was to be demolished because it would provide too clear a landmark for the German army. On 10 May, the engineers bored nine holes at approximately 25 metres height for the installation of explosives. Because of the rapid German invasion on this first day of the war, all soldiers were called away and the work could not be completed. From the Grebbeberg, the Dutch defence later attempted an artillery bombardment, but the shells missed their target.
Description
The chimney is 82 metres high, has a circular shaft with slight taper and consists of an outer wall built predominantly in red radial bricks and a synthetic inner pipe. The radial bricks have a head width of 16 cm. and are 8 cm. thick. The external cross-section measures 10 metres at the base and 6.5 metres at the top. Such large dimensions made it possible to exhaust 550,000 m³ of air per hour. In the lower zone, five elongated, rectangular casings with openings in the circular shaft to the outside are built in regular red facing brick, somewhat resembling milk crates, necessary to achieve a flat connection with the exhaust system. These casings are supported by craftsman-built corbels which, along with a few simple, slightly projecting mouldings in this zone, considerably embellish the brickwork. The outer wall tapers upwards at the plinth and at the height of the casings. In the plinth on the west side a deeply set inspection door under two-stretcher courses. Further, wedge-shaped bricks are used as cappings on the plinth and the casings. Around the shaft, 30 iron tie-rods are installed and below the pear-shaped flaring head is a decorative dentil moulding. In the space between outer wall and inner pipe there are landings and stairs supported by concrete columns. The inner pipe was completely renewed in 1986.
Valuation
The FACTORY CHIMNEY is of general importance:
- the object has cultural-historical values as a distinctive expression of the industrialisation process, in particular in the Dutch artificial silk industry, as an illustrative example of the pioneering character of the management in the field of occupational health, and as a curious and remarkable example for the typological development of factory chimneys during the second industrial revolution;
- the object has building and architectural-historical value because of the trapezium-shaped radial bricks, only temporarily applied in chimney construction, and the aesthetic qualities of the craftsman brickwork in, among others, the corbels, chimney head and decorative mouldings;
- the object has ensemble values as a functional component of the original spinning mill and the deliberately considered siting connected therewith to the south of the former factory square from 1919-1922. The chimney silhouette is furthermore of particular significance for the appearance of this industrial ensemble at the railway line Arnhem-Utrecht;
- since the vast majority of the brick factory chimneys have already been lost, given the use of the brick types, decorations and curiously built casings mentioned above, there is certainly also a question of architectural and typological rarity value.
