Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 1: SCHOORSTEEN bij ketelhuis.
Inleiding
- het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van het industrialisatieproces in vooral de Nederlandse kunstzijde-industrie en als karakteristiek voorbeeld voor de typologische ontwikkeling van fabrieksschoorstenen van de tweede industriële revolutie;
- het object heeft bouwhistorische waarde wegens de alleen in de schoorsteenbouw tijdelijk toegepaste trapeziumvormige radiaalstenen;
- het object heeft stedenbouwkundige en ensemblewaarden als functioneel onderdeel van de oorspronkelijke centrale energievoorziening en de hiermee verband houdende weloverwogen situering op de binnenplaats van het fabriekscarré. Het schoorsteensilhouet is daarnaast van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van dit industrieel ensemble aan de spoorlijn Arnhem-Utrecht;

Description
Description of component 1: CHIMNEY at boiler house.
Introduction
FACTORY CHIMNEY located in the courtyard of the old factory block, built in 1922 as a freestanding chimney originally 75 metres high and erected in an artisanal-traditional building style. One of two factory chimneys on the site, referred to by workers as "the thin one" (designated as number 1 on the accompanying map). The chimney was originally connected via a flue channel on the west side to the boiler house. Due to an expansion of this in 1928 the base became enclosed and hidden from view up to a height of approximately 12 metres. This base, which according to the original design consisted of a tapering plinth with above it a profiled moulding with continuous mouse-tooth frieze, received an extra outer jacket in dark brown brickwork. The shaft was topped and stripped of the original head with cover cap at the time of the designation. The boiler house itself does not fall under protection. On 10 May 1940 the chimney was to be demolished, because it would provide too clear a landmark for the German army. Due to the rapid German invasion on this first day of war all soldiers were called away and the work could not be completed. From the Grebbeberg the Dutch defence later attempted an artillery bombardment, but the shells missed their target.
Description
The chimney is now approximately 50 metres high and consists of a sober round shaft assembled in bright red radial bricks with slight taper. The outer diameter of the original plinth is 6.25 metres. Around the shaft 48 iron tie bands have been applied. On the east side in the plinth there is still the original cast-iron inspection door.
Valuation
The FACTORY CHIMNEY at the boiler house is of general importance:
- the object has cultural-historical values as a particular expression of the industrialisation process especially in the Dutch artificial silk industry and as a characteristic example of the typological development of factory chimneys of the second industrial revolution;
- the object has building-historical value because of the trapezoidal radial bricks applied only temporarily in chimney construction;
- the object has urban design and ensemble values as a functional component of the original central energy supply and the deliberate siting associated with it in the courtyard of the factory block. The chimney silhouette is moreover of particular significance for the appearance of this industrial ensemble on the railway line Arnhem-Utrecht;
- since the vast majority of brick factory chimneys have already been lost, there is also a rarity value, taking into account the application of the radial bricks already mentioned.
